Great illustrations. Our two-year-old loves this book. Portions are definitely lost on her. She does enjoy that it contains dialogue. I'd say it's more appropriate for older children in the four-year-old or older range. Good to read with pretzels. ( )

A ridiculously stupid story about a Duke who is going to spite himself by exiling his favorite baker for messing up one single time. The ending depends on a really contrived bit of mishearing that put me in mind of Ryan George's YouTube videos about how different things got their names, except Eric Carle's version here is not at all funny or good.

We've owned this book for two decades, but I don't believe I've ever read it before. I should have kept the streak going. ( )

Lots of disconnect in this one, but lovely art, and a background on baking. ( )

This is fictitious story about a baker who gets himself into trouble because he used water to bake his rolls instead of milk. The duke and duchess were so upset with him that they threatened to ban him unless he created a new baked good for them. I would absolutely recommend this book for k-2 teachers to use for lessons focusing on retelling and summarizing. This story is engaging and has a great story line that is easy enough to follow along with great vocab words. Media: collage ( )

Walter the Baker by Eric Carle is fictional fantasy children's book. This story has a cute storyline of a traditional baker and his family working in thee bakery and serving the duke and his duchess. Throughout the story children use problem solving skills and see that hard work can get you places. This would be a good story to use in the classroom to use in project of some sort, weather you want the students to make their own story off of this one or get a lesson out of it. Either way this is a great story to use for a fun lesson in the classroom. Also some things that you could talk and discuss with your class would be some of the values that are shown throughout the book.
The illustrations in Walter the Baker are simple water colors with a white background that leave enough room for your own imagination to explore other avenues. ( )

Walter the Baker can show children how to write using dialog. The dialog in this book allow for animated reading using different emphasis on words and emotions, which may make this book a good selection for a read aloud. This book has simple enough text that a beginning reader may also read it independently. ( )

Walter, his wife, and son are well known for their sweet rolls. Duke and Dutchess enjoyed these every day. One day Walter could not make the sweet rolls with milk so instead he used water. The Duke was going to banish him from the Duchy but he begged them to let him stay and so the Duke said only if you invent a roll through with the rising sun can shine three times. So he worked and worked until he got angry and threw the dough in the air and when it came down it was in the shape of what is now called a pretzel. It teaches you that through hard work and determination you can make it through.

Summary: This book is about a baker in a small village. Every moring he bakes the Duke and Duchess sweet rolls until one day his cat spills his milk and he must make the rolls with water instead of milk. The Duke decides to bannish him from the village unless the baker can make a roll that the sun can shine through three times. After many tries he finally invents the pretzel.

Personal Reaction: I enjoyed this book. The colors and pictures are beautiful. There are many bright colors that I think would catch the eyes of the children you are reading to.

Classroon Extention: 1. After reading this book you can give the children pretzels to taste. 2. Because of how the pictures are done in this book you could let the children use scrap pieces of construction paper to create a picture.

The story of Walter, the best baker in Duchy who makes the best sweet rolls in the whole kingdom until one day when his cat was chasing a cat and spilled the all the milk he needed to make the rolls and used water instead thinking that nobody will notice the difference. Little he knew that the Duchess and the Duke were able to tell the different and threatened to vanish him from the kingdom if he could not invent a new pastry in which the sun could shine three times.

This is a great book with an interesting plot that is sure to keep the reader's attention. Would be a great book to read when discussing jobs such as working in a bakery. The unique collages bring the story to life and make the text more enjoyable.

This book is about Walter the Baker, he is known for his sweet rolls, until one day his milk ends up on the floor so he made his sweet rolls with water. The king ate the roll and almost dismissed Walter from the town, until he realized how good the other rolls tasted. He then gave Walter another chance. He had certain obligations that he had to follow. Walter came up with the pretzel. The King LOVED IT!

Great book for all ages! (K-6th Grade)

This book is about a baker who bakes bread for the Duke and Duchess every morning. One morning, a cat tipped over his can of milk and he didn't have enough milk to make the bread rolls. So, he substituted water for milk. The bread rolls were as hard as rocks and the Duke and Duchess were royally ticked off. They told Walter the only way he can continue to bake for them is if he comes up with a good tasting bread that allows the sun to shine through it three times. In anger, Walter through the last piece of dough he had and it fell to the floor. His sister picked it up and put it in the oven for it had fallen perfectly to allow the sun to shine through it three times. Walter discovered the Pretzel.

Walter the Baker , his wife, and son Walter Jr. lived in a small town encircled by a wall. Everyone in town loved Walter's baked goods. They would come from miles away for Walter's breads and rolls. The smell of Walter's breads baking lit the whole town. The Duke and Duchess really liked Walter's sweet rolls. They loved them so much, they had to have them fresh from the bakery every morning. One day, Walter's cat knocked over the milk. Walter had to use water to make the sweet rolls. When the Duke and Duchess bit into the rolls, they found they were like stones. They sent for Walter and threatened to banish him if he could not come up with a roll that the sun could shine through three times. Walter worked all night long, until finally he was done. When her returned to the Duke and Duchess, they tasted the roll and found it to be very tasty. They did not banish Walter. The roll was called a pretzel.

This is a great book with cute illustrations. It is about a baker who must prove himself to the dutch and duchess of his land. He works all night and can't come up with anything until finally the pretzel is created. This would be a great book to teach students to work hard and never give up. Even though the baker wanted to give up, he worked hard enough and eventually created the perfect snack. ( )

This book is about a baker who makes the best rolls in the land. Everyone comes from near and far to buy Walter's rolls. When Walter's cat knocks over the milk he has to use water to make the rolls. The royalty are very displeased with the rolls after this happens. Walter then has to create roll that the sun can shine through three times. This would be a good book to read a loud. Great for k-2.

A great book about a baker that teaches never to give up. It also teaches not to be satisfied with anything but the best.

Walter is the most famous baker in all of the land and every morning the Duke and Duchess begin their day with rolls made by Walter. One day, his cat spills his milk and Walter is forced to make his rolls with water. The Duke and Duchess are very upset and tell him that he will be banished unless he makes a good-tasting roll that the rising sun can shine through 3 times. Here is a great lesson plan based on this book: http://www.learnnc.org/lp/pages/3392 ( )

This is a realistic fiction book. The art is hand-drawn and colored using oil-based paints. All of the pictures are very colorful. It is about a baker named Walter who makes the best rolls ever and people from all over come to eat his rolls. The Duke and Duchess of Duchy have him deliver rolls everyday, but one day he used water instead of milk and it was a huge disaster. The Duke fired him but decided to give him a chance to create a new roll by sunset. He worked all day and the only dough he had left was just enough to make what he called a pretzel. So, he took the pretzel to the Duke to try and get approval and the Duke and Duchess loved it so much, they decided to have rolls in the morning and pretzels at night. The reading level of this book is probably third grade. The curricular connections are: bakers, Duke and Duchess, rolls, pretzels, banishment, approval, and inventions. ( )

By order of the Duke, Walter hte Baker must invent a tasty roll. This is a lively and coloful picture book that is great for young readers. ( )

This is a historical fiction about how the pretzel started. It is historical fiction because it is not actually a true story but it is believable and it happened a long time ago when kings and queens were in charge. I would use this in the primary grades to show the students a plausible story about how pretzels where made. The bread maker was the main character and he learned through many experiences, and in the end he was a very round and growing character. ( )

Walter the Baker is famous for his breads, rolls, cookies, tarts, and pies. The Duke and Duchess especially love his warm sweet rolls, delivered fresh to their castle every morning. But one day the cat spills the milk, and Walter is forced to serve the Duke and Duchess rolls made with water. After one bite the Duke throws down his roll in disgust and summons Walter to the castle. He threatens to banish the baker unless he can take the same dough and make a good-tasting roll that the rising sun can shine through three times. Will Walter succeed in his task, or will he have to leave his town forever?
With good humor and the vibrantly colored paper collages that are known and loved the world over, Eric Carle has concocted a delicious book that kids will savor as much as they love eating...shhh...pretzels
