HOSE.

3,000 feet of new hose were purchased during the year, and I would respectfully recommend the purchase of at least 3,000 feet during the incoming year. With that amount we would have a full supply of hose.

FIRE ALARMS.

Since the first day of January last the Department has been called out 101 times. Forty-eight slight fires have occurred and been extinguished by companies located in the vicinity, without causing an alarm to be sounded, making a total of 149 fires and alarms.

FIRES.

As will appear in the tabular statement accompanying this report, the loss by fire during the year has been exceedingly small, amounting to but $26,419.00, on which there was an insurance of $22,408.00; loss over insurance, $4,011.00. The largest fire during the year was the Eagle Cotton Mill, located on Sandusky Street, involving a loss of $13,950.00.

In transmitting to your honorable bodies a review of the work of the Department, I feel that we have just cause for pride and congratulation; and I point with a sense of the deepest gratification to the record of the losses by fire during the year, showing, as it does, that this Department, in point of efficiency, is equaled by few and excelled by none.

CONCLUSION.

Before closing this report, I take this opportunity to bear testimony to the exceedingly good conduct of the members of the Department, who have labored most zealous in the discharge of their respective duties.

Finally, I desire to return my sincere thanks to the members of the Fire Committee and members of Councils in general for their kindness and support.

Respectfully submitted.

JAMES E. CROW,

Chief Engineer Allegheny Fire Department.
