London : MITCHELL & Co., Charing Cross. WEST INDIA REGIMENTS. By CAPTAIN ROGERS, F.R.G.S. The close of the last century witnessed one of the fiercest struggles for supremacy between two great nations that has, perhaps, ever occurred since the world began. At home and abroad, on sea and on land it was waged with merciless loss of life and treasure, and with the pertinacity that could only spring from love of country, or admiration and respect for a victorious leader. England and France were equally determined to fight out the question of might regardless of the rights of others wbo stood in their way, and fight they did to the bitter end. In the West Indies both fleets and armies were employed in the internecine conflict, and one island after another was captured or released in utter contempt of the sufferings endured by their unfortunate inbabitants, who were alternately petted and requisitioned as the case might be, or were reluctantly obliged to take part in attack or defence as the circumstances demanded. In 1795, Sir Ralph Abercrombie was commander-in-chief of our forces, and under him seven West India Regiments were raised for strictly local services by direction of the Home Authorities. These Corps were primarily composed of negro slaves, purchased from their owners in different islands, but chiefly in Barbadoes, and varied in price according to the locality they originally hailed froin. Thus Gambia negro was valued at £16 a head, while a Gold Coast native was worth £2 more. But it was not because of their intrinsic value that the planters of the West Indian Archipelago thought it hard to be thus summarily deprived of their labourers. No doubt the Government contract price was fair and reas asonable, and no objection could be raised on that score. Nor yet were the Barbadian or Jamaican Incolants disloyal to the land of their birth and unmindful of their duty to assist in keeping the enemy from their gates. Indeed Bimshire (as Barbadoes is commonly called) has time out of mind been justly proud of the sacrifices it has made on the shrine of patriotism, and in this respect the pretentious little island has been a shining light among its fellows in the Carribbean sea. The fact was, the colonists dreaded the embodiment of a force composed of human beings, whom heretofore they looked upon as brutes, or at best as something only better than a beast of burthen. In a statute for the government of negroes passed by the Barbadoes Legislature in the early days of its existence was the following merciful enactment.* “If any person wantonly or * Poyer's “ History of Barbadoes,” 1808.
