STORAGE WAREHOUSES AND BULK FREIGHT STORAGE The only facilities for covered storage are the transit sheds on the two piers owned and operated by the board of harbor commissioners. Tanks are available at the port for the storage of molasses. THE PORT OF NAWILIWILI, T. H. PORT AND HARBOR CONDITIONS GENERAL DESCRIPTION Nawiliwili Harbor is situated on the southeast coast of the Island of Kauai, about 100 miles northwest of Honolulu. The entrance to the harbor is due west from Ninini Point Light between the end of the breakwater and north shore, thence to the southwest on the inside of the breakwater. It is well marked by buoys. The project for improving the harbor provides for a rubble mound breakwater about 2,150 feet in length along the reef which separates the inner harbor from the outer harbor; for a harbor basin 35 feet deep and 1,100 feet wide, having an average length of about 2,000 feet; and for an entrance channel 600 feet wide and 35 feet deep. The controlling depth on September 30, 1940, was 35 feet except for small areas along the project lines. All depths are referred to the plane of mean lower low water. TIDES AND TIDAL CURRENTS The tidal range between mean lower low water and mean higher high water is about 1.8 feet and the extreme tidal range is about 4 feet. The currents generally follow the winds, though frequently setting in the opposite direction during the first calms after strong trade winds. ANCHORAGES No areas have been designated for anchorage. In ordinary weather vessels can anchor, with some protection from the trade winds, between Ninini and Kukii Points, outside the breakwater. Vessels in the lee of the breakwater may have to leave their anchorage on steamer days to clear the channel to the wharf. 35 FUEL AND SUPPLIES ELECTRIC CURRENT Neither of the 2 piers at the port is equipped to supply electric current to vessels. Current of 110 voltages, 60-cycle, 3-phase is available on pier No. 1 for lighting, but lights are not available at pier No. 2. WATER SUPPLY Each of the piers is equipped with a 6-inch line for supplying water to vessels. The water is supplied from the county system at a rate of 25 cents per 1,000 gallons to vessels in the interisland trade and 45 cents to offshore vessels. There is an additional Territorial wharf toll charge of 6 cents per 1,000 gallons. OIL BUNKERING There are no oil bunkering facilities available at Nawiliwili Harbor 36 |
