THE PORT OF KAHULUI, T. H. PORT AND HARBOR CONDITIONS GENERAL DESCRIPTION Kahului is situated on the north coast of the island of Maui. It is about 90 nautical miles from Honolulu and about 110 miles from Hilo. Kahului is the terminus of the Kahului Railroad, which connects with the principal sugar plantations of the island. The width of the opening is about 600 feet. The east breakwater is 2,850 feet long and the west breakwater 2,396 feet long. A channel 600 feet wide at the entrance, with a maximum width of 1,450 feet, has been dredged from the entrance to the east end of the harbor along the lee of the east breakwater. The depth is 35 feet below mean lower low water. The channel or basin is protected from the prevailing northeast trade winds by the east breakwater. The development of terminal facilities has been confined to the east end of the harbor, behind the base of the east breakwater.
