Ir is proper to state, that this volume has been prepared at the request of a friend of Common Schools, and is now published through his instruinentality. He has directed a copy of it to be placed in each of the School Districts, incorporated Academies, and County Clerks' Offices of the State of New-York, as well as in the hands of the Governors of the several states, and of the Deputy Superintendents of Common Schools in the several counties of this state.
Though prepared with special reference to the condition and wants of Common Schools in the State of New-York, its general principles and most of its details will be found applicable to similar schools in other parts of the country, and, indeed, to all seminaries employed in giving elementary instruction.
