THE MILLER MANUAL LABOR SCHOOL OF ALBEMARLE. REPORT FOR 1901. MILLER SCHOOL, VA., September 15, 1901. HON. J. W. SOUTHALL, Superintendent of Public Instruction. SIR,-The Miller Manual Labor School of Albemarle was founded by Samuel Miller for the benefit of the poor orphan and other white children whose parents are unable to educate them, the same being residents of the county of Albemarle. The children are recommended by the School Trustees of Albemarle county and are appointed by the County Court of Albemarle. The school was opened for the reception of pupils Octobr 15, 1878. Twenty pupils were received, at which time C. E. Vawter was superintendent; J. Roy Baylor, Jr., first teacher, and Mrs. V. P. Means, matron. The first girls were received into the school November 24, 1884, with Mrs. Isabella Coleman, Principal of the Girls' Department, and Mrs. J. W. Calhoun, teacher. There are now in the school 150 boys and 100 girls. Since the organization of the school there have been received into the school 789 boys and 284 girls. There have left the school 639 boys and 184 girls. During the twenty-four years of the existence of the school there have died at the school 7 boys and 2 girls. The Endowment Fund of the school is to-day $1,471,238.49. The annual income is $75,500.30. The Academic Course includes algebra, geometry, trigonometry, conic sections, physics for two years, chemistry for two years, biology one year, German three years, Latin four years and English four years. Industrial courses include drawing-free-hand and mechanical-instruction in woodwork, in forging, in foundry and machine work, designing and making machines, electrical and mechanical engineering, horticulture, arborculture, floriculture, millinery, dressmaking and cooking. Practically, the students in connection with their home life have to learn to milk, care for stock, fruits and vegetables. They learn to care for electric wires, electric plants, steam and water plants, and steam and water pipes. The Miller School plant has cost about $600,000, and is always kept in good order. There are ten grades in the school, four in the Primary-10th, 9th, 8th and 7th; three in the Intermediate-6th, 5th and 4th, and three in the Academic-3rd, 2nd and 1st. DEAR SIR,-In conformity with the act of Assembly, approved May 12, 1888, I have the honor to submit the following report of the work done at the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute for the year ending May 31, 1901. According to a regulation of the Board, a fee of one dollar is required to be paid to the secretary, on the entrance of each student, for doctor's services. These figures indicate an increase of only one over last year, when the enrolment was 341. As usual, quite a number made application who could not meet our requirements; and some came, but not making the classes they expected, returned to their homes. The normal classes were more crowded than ever before, so much so that it was necessary to divide the middle as well as the junior class. The senior or graduating class of the Normal Department contained 44, 38 of whom were warded diplomas. Our alumni are thus increased to 420. The two hundred places provided by law for State students have all been filled. Many more could have been filled if all appointees had been received. The attendance of the Summer Normal was the smallest ever enrolled here. This was due, no doubt, to the small salaries paid the teachers, the short terms, the desire for change, and misunderstandings as to privileges granted to those who attend. It is now a question whether the Board is justified in continuing the Summer Normal here at so much expense with such poor attendance. MODEL SCHOOL COURSE. The pupils in the Model School are from six to twelve years of age, and they are selected from the immediate neighborhood of the school. The teaching is done mainly by the graduating class of the Normal Department, subject to the constant supervision of the Superintendent of the Model School. The course of instruction comprises the usual branches taught in common schools. Special attention is given to Object Lessons, Drawing and Penmanship. NORMAL PREPARATORY SCHOOL. Many of the students enter the school quite deficient in the elementary branches, and this fact renders necessary a Normal Preparatory course, which is as follows: Arithmetic, White, review Decimal Fractions and Advance to Percentage; Hyde's Practical English Grammar and Composition; Maury's Manual of Geography; Magill's History of Virginia and Fiske's History of United States to Washington's Administration; Reed's Word Lessons; Warren's Manual of Elocution; Heath's Vertical Penmanship, and Thompson's Drawing. NORMAL COURSE. Students having a knowledge of the branches named in the Normal Preparatory Course, can enter this course and graduate in three years. The studies for the three years are as follows: |
