PREFACE. 1 SOME portions of the following pages, as delivered by the author from the pulpit, in the usual course of his ministry, having been attended by the Divine blessing, it has occurred to him that he might render a service to the Church of God by presenting to the public the same ideas, in' a somewhat enlarged and connected form,rough the medium of the press. The view the writer has here endeavoured to give, is that the ministry of Christ, including His doctrines and character, is altogether supernatural and divine, and that Christianity, far from being the product of human reason and of the advancement of society, is a vast scheme of Divine mercy, displaying the perfections of God, designed in eternal ages, and embracing all the history of the world, gradually unfolded and wrought out by Him "who is God manifest in the flesh."
