THE PORT OF KAHULUI, T. H.

PORT AND HARBOR CONDITIONS

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Kahului is situated on the north coast of the island of Maui. It is about 90 nautical miles from Honolulu and about 110 miles from Hilo. Kahului is the terminus of the Kahului Railroad, which connects with the principal sugar plantations of the island.

There is no natural harbor at Kahului. Entrance is made directly from the open sea between two breakwaters approximately at right angles, which enclose an area of about 200 acres. The width of the opening is about 600 feet. The east breakwater is 2,850 feet long and the west breakwater 2,396 feet long. A channel 600 feet wide at the entrance, with a maximum width of 1,450 feet, has been dredged from the entrance to the east end of the harbor along the lee of the east breakwater. The depth is 35 feet below mean lower low water. The channel or basin is protected from the prevailing northeast trade winds by the east breakwater. The development of terminal facilities has been confined to the east end of the harbor, behind the base of the east breakwater.

TIDES AND TIDAL CURRENTS

The mean range of tides is 2.4 feet and the extreme range, under ordinary conditions, is 3.4 feet. Tidal currents are negligible.

ANCHORAGES

In ordinary weather there are safe anchorages about 2 miles north of the harbor, near Waihee Reef buoy. There are mooring buoys inside the harbor under the lee of the east breakwater.
