COUNTY INSTITUTIONS.

CATTARAUGUS COUNTY ALMSHOUSE, Machias, N. Y.

Inspected by Inspector Rogers February 26, 1904. Keeper. William J. Van De Water, appointed November 1, 1902.

Attached to the almshouse are 193 acres of land, 80 of which are reported to be under cultivation; value of land and buildings, $65,000; estimated value of the labor of the inmates during the year, $100; estimated value of the products of the farm, $2,200; receipts from sales, $850.

Expenses in connection with the almshouse for the year ending September 30, 1904, $13,318.67; estimated weekly expense per person, $1.54; expense of temporary (outdoor) relief administered by the superintendent and overseers of the poor, $15,073.29; expense of support in whole or in part in institutions other than the almshouse, $3,348.27; aggregate expenditures for support and relief, $31,740.23.

Total number in the almshouse during the year, 128; remaining October 1, 1904, 75 (54 males and 21 females), including 18 feebleminded or idiotic, 3 deaf and 1 blind person; number of wayfarers to whom meals were furnished at the almshouse, 84; number receiving temporary (outdoor) relief, 785; number supported in other institutions, 41; total supported and relieved during the year, 1,038.

WESTERN NEW YORK SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF HOMELESS AND DEPEndent chiLDREN (THE), Randolph, N. Y.

Object. To establish and maintain at Randolph, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of New York, a home for friendless and destitute or unprotected children, and to receive and take charge of such children under the age of 16 years as may be voluntarily intrusted to them by their parents or guardians or committed to their charge by competent authority, and to provide for their support; and to afford them the means of moral, intellectual and industrial education.

Terms and qualifications for admittance.-$1.50 per week for board and care; dependent and orphan children under 16 years of age are received.
