THE SCIENCE PRESS
The Proceedings of the American Association for the Advancement of Science were published as annual volumes from the founding of the Association until 1910. Since 1910 the announcements and the reports of the meetings, together with the presidential and vice-presidential addresses and other official publications, have appeared in the weekly journal SCIENCE, official organ of the Association which is sent free to all members. The adoption of this plan rendered unnecessary the publication of the full proceedings, and they were replaced by volumes of summarized proceedings (with references to SCIENCE) published at intervals of several years. A volume of the Summarized Proceedings, including the Constitution, the Lists of Officers, references to SCIENCE for the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Addresses, and the List of Members, was published in 1912, a second in 1915, and a third (somewhat more complete) in 1921. The present volume is the fourth of the series of Summarized Proceedings. It presents reports for the four-year period from June, 1921, to June, 1925, and corresponds to what would be volumes LXXIV-LXXVII of the full Proceedings if that series of publications had been continued in the earlier form.
The material presented in this volume is classified in two parts, as follows: Part I, Records and Proceedings, the latter including Summary Reports for the Fiscal Years: 1920–21 (in part), 1921–22, 1922–23, 1923–24 and 1924–25 (in part). Part II, The Directory of Members (for the period from June, 1921, to June, 1925), to which is prefixed an Annotated List of the Organizations Officially Associated with the Association.
In the work of preparing and editing the material here presented, the permanent secretary has been very ably assisted by the assistant secretary, Dr. Francis D. Murnaghan; by the executive assistant, Mr. Sam Woodley; by the secretarial assistant, Miss Lena E. Dykes; and by the accounting and filing assistant, Mrs. Sam Woodley.
The permanent secretary is glad to make mention here of the loyal help that they have given. It is also a pleasure to record the fact that Dr. Sam F. Trelease has had charge of the proof-reading of this volume, in which he has been efficiently assisted by Mrs. Trelease.
