The use of outlines representing phrases belongs to an advanced stage of shorthand writing. The importance of phrase-outlines cannot be overrated, and there is, practically, no limit to their employment. An alphabet so complete as that given in this work, with the peculiar facility of joining possessed by TAYLOR'S characters, lends itself in an unequalled manner to this development of the art. A phrase-outline may often be composed of the first character of each word of a phrase; in other cases a leading character of a word may be chosen. The chief thing to aim at is, that the outline should be distinctive; and it should not resemble a word which could take the place of the phrase in the sentence. Many phrases of courtesy used in Parliament, &c., are omitted here, because the student may compose them for himself, bearing in mind that m stands for "my" or "member," 1 for "learned," n for "noble," f for 'friend," g for "gallant," j for "gentleman " or " gentlemen," h for "honorable," r for "right," b for "baronet."
