The general election is held on the first Tuesday in November. His term commences the third Tuesday of January. The Secretary of State is appointed by the Governor, with the advice and consent of the Senate. His term of office is five years. The Treasurer is elected by the Legislature on joint ballot for one year, and until his successor is qualified; and the State Librarian is appointed for three years. The Adjutant and Quartermaster General are appointed by the Governor. Senators, 21 in number, are elected for three years, one-third every year. Representatives, 60 in number, are elected each year. The pay of a member of either branch is $3 a day for the first forty days, $1.50 a day afterwards. The presiding officers are paid $4 a day for the first forty days, and $2 a day afterwards. The Legislature meets annually at Trenton, on the second Tuesday of January. *And $5 per diem for each day's attendance on the Court of Errors and Appeals. |
