PREFACE.

The need of an annual bibliography in which shall be registered all books and articles, of any value or importance, relating to American history and published in a given year, is one that has been acutely felt by many investigators. Such volumes, covering a greater or lesser portion of the historical product relating to certain other countries, already exist and have been found of the greatest utility by persons engaged in historical research-Brière and Caron's Répertoire Méthodique de l'Histoire Moderne et Contemporaine de la France, for example, or Masslow's Bibliographie zur deutschen Geschichte which accompanies the Historische Vierteljahrschrift. In the United States à beginning was made by Professor Ernest C. Richardson and Mr. Anson E. Morse, whose compilation, entitled Writings on American History, 1902, was published at Princeton in 1904. This was followed by a publication of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, entitled Writings on American History, 1903, edited by Professor Andrew C. McLaughlin, then director of its Department of Historical Research, and prepared by Mr. McLaughlin, Mr. William A. Slade and Mr. Ernest D. Lewis. The trustees of the Carnegie Institution, however, declined to provide for a continuance of that volume. Efforts to make such a provision otherwise did not become effectual in season to permit timely issue of volumes for 1904 and 1905. That the series is resumed at all, is due to the generous subscriptions which the societies and individuals named on the ensuing page have made to a guaranty fund intended to ensure the maintenance of the enterprise during the five years from 1907 to 1911 inclusive, and to provide for volumes covering at least the annual product of the years 1906-1910.

The plan of the volume for 1903 has been closely followed, except in a few particulars, the chief of which may here be mentioned. A greater attempt has been made to list exhaustively the material relating to British America. With respect to the regions lying south of the continental United States, however, and to the Pacific islands, no attempt has been made to include a selection of the titles of writings published in those regions. A select bibliography has its uses; but in this case it was found impossible to make a selection that represented anything else than chance. It seemed better, in a bibliography of which the other portions purported to be complete within their definitions, to assume in this division also a definition that could be followed out successfully as far as it went. Accordingly, all writings on the history of these regions, published in the United States or Europe, have, so far as is known, been included, but the product (not relating to the United States) of South America and other southward regions has been left to their own bibliographers.

As in the case of 1903, the attempt has been made to include all articles

which contain anything of value to American history, however brief. New editions of books, if they contain no new material, have not been noticed. When no other date of publication is given, the date is 1906. The annotations have been confined to explanations of titles which seemed to need explanation; to analyses of contents (mostly taken from the catalogue cards of the Library of Congress), when analyses seemed requisite; and to mention of critical appraisals in a few journals whose criticisms have value.

Miss Grace Gardner Griffin has, after the earlier stages, done nearly all the work of compilation. At the beginning, valuable aid was received from Miss Jenny Chamberlain Watts. Dr. Herbert Putnam, Librarian of Congress, Mr. Appleton P. C. Griffin, chief bibliographer of that library, and in a less degree many other of its obliging officials, have aided the progress of the work by affording valued facilities or by advice and active assistance.
