Notice when Paper is to be weighed.

ner herein directed.

into Quires or Half Quires, each fuch Quire to confift of Twenty four Sheets, and each Half Quire to confift of Twelve Sheets; and fuch Quires or Half Quires shall immediately afterwards be made up into Reams, each fuch Ream to confift of Twenty fuch Quires or of Forty fuch Half Quires; and all fuch Paper, Pafteboard, Millboard, Scaleboard and Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper or Button Board refpectively, shall be immediately made up into Parcels, and fuch Parcel containing even Dozens of Sheets, not lefs than Twenty four nor more than Seventy two Sheets each Parcel; and all Quires and Reams of Paper, and all Parcels of Pafteboard, Millboard, Scaleboard or Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper or Button Board, fhall within the meaning of this Act be deemed to confift of fuch Quantities refpectively, and of no other; and if any fuch Maker of Paper shall neglect fo to make up, or fhall at any time make up any Paper, Palteboard, Millboard, Scaleboard, Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper or Button Board made in Ireland, contrary to the Directions aforefaid, fuch Maker shall for each and every fuch Offence forfeit the Sum of Fifty Pounds, and alfo all the Paper, Pafteboard, Millboard, Scale board and Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper or Button Board refpectively, made up contrary to the Directions of this A&t.

XXII. And be it enacted, That every Paper Maker whofe Mill or Mills shall be fituate in any City or Market Town, or within One Mile thereof respectively, fhall give or caufe to be given Twenty four Hours' previous Notice in Writing, and every Paper Maker whofe Mill or Mills fhall be fituate in any other Part of Ireland, shall give or caufe to be given Forty eight Hours' Notice to the Officer in charge of fuch Mill or Mills refpectively of the particular Day and Hour when any Paper of any Sort, Class or Kind whatever fhall be to be weighed, and the Officer fhall attend accordingly; and when and fo foon as fuch Officer or Officers fhall fo attend, fuch Paper Maker, or his, her or their Servant or Servants, fhall produce and bring to fuch Officer or Officers all the Paper, Pafteboard, Millboard, Scale board or Glazed Board, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper and Button Board refpectively, for or in refpect whereof the Duty is then intended to be charged, which Paper, Pafteboard, Millboard, Scaleboard or Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper and Button Board fhall be brought inclofed or tied up in manner hereinafter mentioned; that is to fay, all fuch Paper of the Firft Clafs and all fuch Paper of the Second Clafs fhall be inclosed and tied up with a String in feveral Covers or Wrappers, containing One Ream of Paper each, and not more or lefs; and all Pafteboard, Millboard, Scale board and Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper and Button Board refpectively, fhall be tied up with a String in fuch Parcels as aforefaid, and that the different Parts of fuch String fhall pafs over and across the Ends and Sides of fuch Ream of Paper or Parcel of Pafteboard, Millboard, Scaleboard or Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper or Button Board refpectively; and in cafe any Paper Maker fhall not at the time mentioned in fuch Notice produce to fuch Officer or Officers all the Paper, Pasteboard, Millboard, Scaleboard or Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper and Button Board for or in refpect whereof any Duty is then to be charged,

fuch Paper, Pafteboard, 'Millboard, Scaleboard and Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper and Button Board refpectively, being tied up, and the proper Clafs and other the matters by this Act prefcribed, marked, written or printed on the Cover or Wrapper of each fuch Ream of Paper, and on each such Parcel of Pafteboard, Millboard, Scaleboard and Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper and Button Board refpectively, according to the Directions of this Act, then every fuch Notice fhall be and the fame is hereby declared to be null and void; and every Notice void... fuch Paper Maker fhall be obliged to give a fresh and like Notice before fuch Paper, Pafteboard, Millboard, Scale board or Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper and Button Board, fhall be taken an Account of and charged with Duty; and before he or the fhall remove, carry or fend away, or fuffer to be removed, carried or fent away any fuch Paper, Pafteboard, Millboard, Scaleboard or Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper and Button Board, from the Mill where the fame fhall be made. XXIII. And be it further enacted, That on every Cover or How Wrapper Wrapper of any Ream of Paper of the Firft Clafs, or of Paper of of Ream of the Second Clais, before any fuch Paper shall be brought or produced marked and Paper to be to any Officer of Excife to be weighed, there fhall be marked, numbered hewritten or printed by the Maker thereof, or by his or her Servant fore it is weighed. in large and legible Characters, and in Words at length, the Name and Surname of fuch Paper Maker, er instead of fuch Name and Surname there fhall be marked fuch Mark or Device as fhall be from time to time appointed or approved of by the Commiffioners of Inland Excife and Taxes in Ireland, or any Three of them, for diftinguifting fuch Paper to be the Manufacture of fuch Maker thereof,

and the Words" Firft Clafs," or "Second Clafs," diftinguishing the Words "First Clafs of Paper inclosed in fuch Cover or Wrapper, and according to Clais," &c. which the Duty in refpect of the fame is chargeable; and upon every fuch Cover or Wrapper fhall alfo be written the Day of the Month and Year denoting the Month and Year in which fuch Paper fhall have been made into Reams; and after fuch Date there shall be written in Figures the true Number of fuch Ream of Paper according to the Numbers of fuch Reams of each fuch Clafs, fuch Number to be in Arithmetical Progreffion, beginning with Number One, according to the Number of Reams of Paper of each Clafs charged with Duty at each Mill in fuch Month; and that on each Parcel of Pafteboard, Millboard, Scaleboard or Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper or Button Board, there fhall in like manner, before the fame fhall be produced or brought to the Officer to be weighed, be marked, written or printed in large and legible Characters, and in Words at length, the Name and Surname of the Maker thereof, or instead of fuch Name and Surname, there fhall be marked fuch Mark or Device as fhall be from time to time appointed or approved of by the faid Commiffioners of Inland Excife and Taxes, or any Three of them, for diftinguifhing fuch Pafte board, Millboard, Scaleboard or Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper or Button Board, to be the Manufacture of the Maker thereof, and the Defcription of fuch Parcel, and whether fuch Parcel is Pafteboard, Millboard, Scale board or Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper or Button Board, and the Number of Sheets in each fuch Parcel, with the Date of the Month

Month and Year in which fuch Pafteboard, Millboard, Scale board or Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper or Button Board fhall have been made into Parcels; and after fuch Date there shall be written in Figures the true Number of fuch Parcel of Pafteboard, Millboard, Scale board and Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper or Button Board, according to the Numbers of fuch Parcels of Pafteboard, Millboard, Scale board and Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper or Button Board refpectively, fuch Number to be in Arithmetical Progreffion, beginning with Number One according to the Number of Parcels of Pafteboard, Millboard, Scale board and Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper or Button Board, charged with Duty at each Mill in fuch Month; and if any Maker of Paper, Pafteboard, Millboard, Scaleboard or Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper or Button Board, shall neglect to mark and number the faid Reams or Parcels in manner herein directed, or to cause the fame to be marked and numbered as aforefaid, every fuch Paper Maker shall for every fuch Offence forfeit the Sum of Fifty Pounds.

XXIV. And be it further enacted, That it fhall and may be lawful for any Officer or Officers of Excife at all times to untie and open any Ream or Parcel of Paper having any Class of Paper denominated, marked, written or printed thereon, or on the Wrapper or Cover inclofing the fame, and to take thereout by way of Sample One or more Sheet or Sheets of Paper, not exceeding One Sheet out of each Quire, paying for fuch Sheet or Sheets of Paper fo taken (if demanded) the Market Price thereof; and if any fuch Officer thall difcover in any Ream or Parcel of fuch Paper any Paper or Papers of a different Class than that which shall be denominated, marked, written or printed thereon, or on the Cover or Wrapper in which fuch Paper fhall be inclosed, then and in fuch case every fuch Ream and Parcel refpectively fhall be forfeited, and fhall and may be feized by any Officer or Officers of Excife, and the Paper Maker in whofe Poffeffion the fame fhall be found shall for every such Offence forfeit the Sum of Fifty Pounds.

XXV. And be it further enacted, That every Paper Maker shall and he or she is hereby required, at his or her own Expence, to provide and keep fufficient and juft Scales and Weights, fubftantially fixed or erected at his or her Mill or Place where he or she shall make or produce to be charged any Paper, Pafteboard, Millboard, Scaleboard or Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper and Button Board, or shall keep the fame, or any of them ; and alfo to permit and fuffer any Officer or Officers of Excife to use the fame for the Purpose of afcertaining the refpective Weight of fuch Paper, Pafteboard, Millboard, Scale board or Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper and Button Board; and if any Paper Maker fhall neglect to keep fuch Scales and Weights, or either of them, fo fixed or erected at fuch Place or Places aforefaid, or fhall not permit or fuffer any Officer of Excife to use the fame for the Purpofe aforefaid, he or fhe fhall for each and every fuch Offence forfeit the Sum of One hundred Pounds; and if any Paper Maker fhall provide or make ufe of, or caufe or procure or fuffer to be provided or made ufe of, any false, unjust, or infufficient Scales or Weights, or fhall practife or caufe or procure to be prae

tifed any Art, Device or Contrivance, by which any fuch Officer
or Officers may be hindered or prevented from or deceived in taking
the juft and true Weight of any Paper, Pafteboard, Millboard, Scale-
board or Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper,
and Button Board, then and in every such case fuch Paper Maker shall
for each and every fuch Offence forfeit the Sum of One hundred Penaky.
Pounds, together with all fuch false, unjuft or infufficient Scales and
Weights refpectively, and the same shall and may be seized by any
Officer or Officers of Excise.

XXVI. And be it further enacted, That the Officer or Officers Allowance of of Excife fhall in the weighing and reweighing of all Paper, Pafte- 2lb. on every board, Millboard, Scaleboard or Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheath- the Turn of Ioolb. for giving ing Paper, Button Paper and Button Board, for the Purpose of the Scale. charging the Duty of Excife thereon, give the Turn of the Scale in Favour of the Crown, and in lieu thereof, fhall allow the Paper Maker Two Pounds Weight Avoirdupois, upon each and every One hundred Pounds Weight on the Amount of the Weight of fuch Paper, Pafteboard, Millboard, Scale board or Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper and Button Board, refpectively, fo weighed or reweighed, and fo in Proportion for any greater or leffer Quantity.

XXVII. Provided nevertheless, and be it enacted, That no No Weight lefs Paper Maker fhall, in the weighing or re-weighing of any Paper, than 1lb. to be Pafteboard, Millboard, Scale board or Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper or Button Board, for the Purpose of charging the Duty of Excife thereon, make use of, or cause, permit or fuffer to be used, any Weight lefs than a Pound Weight, on pain of forfeiting the faid Allowance, any thing herein before Forfeit of Alcontained to the contrary in any wife notwithstanding.

XXVIII. And be it enacted, That every Paper Maker fhall, fo Paper Maker to often as he or she shall be thereunto required by any Officer or affift Officer in Officers of Excife, bring or cause to be brought and put into and weighing Paper. taken out of the Scale all Paper, Pafteboard, Millboard, Scaleboard and Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper or Button Board respectively, which fuch Officer or Officers fhall be defirous to weigh or to reweigh; and fhall alfo, at the Requeft of fuch Officer or Officers, by himself or herself refpectively, and with a fufficient Number of his or her Servants, aid and affift, to the utmost of his, her or their Power, fuch Officer or Officers in weighing and in reweighing all fuch Paper, Pafteboard, Millboard, Scaleboard and Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper or Button Board refpectively, in fuch manner as fuch Officer fhall think moft convenient, on pain of fuch Paper Maker forfeiting Penalty. for every Neglect or Refufal thereof the Sum of Fifty Pounds.

XXIX. And be it further enacted, That no Paper, Pafteboard, Paper, &c. not to Millboard, Scaleboard or Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing be removed for Paper, Button Paper or Button Board, fhall be removed or conveyed 24 Hours after from the Mill or other Place, where the fame fhall have been fo weighed, by any Officer of Excife, for the Purpose of charging the Duty, before the Expiration of Twenty four Hours next after the fame fhall have been fo weighed; and every Paper Maker shall from time to time keep all fuch Paper, Pafteboard, Millboard, Scale board and Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper, and Button Board refpectively, which fhall have been fo weighed, sepa

rate and apart from all other Paper, Pafteboard, Millboard, Scaleboard and Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper and Button Board, for the Space of Twenty four Hours from the time when the fame fhall have been fo weighed, to the end that an Inspector, Surveyor or other proper Officer of Excife may have an Opportunity to reweigh the fame; and if upon the reweighing of any fuch Paper, Pafteboard, Millboard, Scale board or Duty to be paid Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper or Button Board, any additional Weight fhall be found, fuch Paper, Pafteboard, Millboard, Scaleboard or Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper or Button Board, fhall be liable to and chargeable with the refpective Rates and Duties of Excife, by Law impofed, according to fuch laft mentioned Weight; and if any fuch Paper, Pafteboard, Millboard, Scale board or Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper or Button Board, fhall be removed contrary to the Intent and Meaning of this Act, or if any Paper, Pafteboard, Millboard, Scaleboard or Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper or Button Board refpectively, which fhall have been weighed, fhall not be kept feparate and apart from all other Paper, Pafteboard, Millboard, Scaleboard and Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper, and Button Board refpectively, in manner hereinbefore directed, the Paper Maker fhall for each and every fuch Offence forfeit the Sum of Fifty Pounds.

XXX. And be it further enacted, That when and fo foon as the Officer of Excife attending to charge fuch Paper, Pafteboard, Millboard, Scaleboard or Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper and Button Board, fhall be fatisfied that the feveral Conditions by this Act fpecified have been fully complied with according to the Directions of this Act, and fhall have alfo afcertained the true Qualities, Quantities and Weights of all fuch Paper,' Pafteboard, Millboard, Scale board and Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper and Button Board refpectively, fuch Officer fhall forthwith ftamp or mark each and every Wrapper or Cover inclofing Paper of the First Clafs, and every Wrapper or Cover inclofing Paper of the Second Class, and every fuch Parcel of Pafteboard, Millboard, Scaleboard and Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper and Button Board, with the proper Stamp or Device, to denote the Duty of Excife impofed for or in refpect of fuch Paper, Pafteboard, Millboard, Scaleboard and Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper and Button Board refpectively, duly charged; or fhall affix to each and every fuch Ream of Paper, or to any fuch Parcel of Pafteboard, Millboard, Scale board and Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper and Button Board, a proper Label to denote the like Duty being fo charged; and fuch Officer fhall forthwith also write his Name and Surname on each and every fuch Wrapper or Cover, and on each and every fuch Parcel of Pafteboard, Millboard, Scaleboard and Glazed Paper, Sheating or Sheathing Paper, Button Paper and Button Board refpectively, together with the Date of the Day, Month and Year on which the Duty was charged for or in refpect thereof respectively; and if any Perfon or Perfons fhall wilfully deface, obliterate or alter any of the refpective matters or things hereinbefore prefcribed to be denominated, marked, written or printed
