MEMORANDA. On the 23rd February the Hon. W. P. CULLEN, M.L.C., was appointed one of his Majesty's Counsel. On the 20th November the Hon. Sir FREDERICK DARLEY, G.C.M.G., Chief Justice, was, by his Majesty's command, appointed a Member of His Most Honourable Privy Council. On the 22nd November, The Hon. JOHN HENRY WANT, K.C., died. On Thursday the 23rd in the Banco Court, The CHIEF JUSTCE said :"Mr. Pilcher, and gentlemen of the Bar, I have to announce that the Court will rise to-day at I o'clock for the convenience of those members of both branches of the profession and the officials of the Court who desire to attend the funeral of the Hon. JOHN WANT. In making this announcement I desire to say a few words. Mr. WANT was called to the Bar of this colony on November 13, 1869, and has on several occasions filled the office of Attorney-General with great benefit to this community. When yesterday we heard with deep regret of his death, we felt that a strong man in his profession and in public life had been removed from amongst us. He was an able lawyer, a zealous, brilliant and fearless advocate, yet never permitting his advocacy to overstep proper bounds. During his 36 years of practice I never once heard an unkind remark fall from his lips, while at the same time he fought his client's case with unremitting energy and diligence. No more honourable and courteous opponent ever practised. He would have adorned any Bar in his Majesty's dominions. He was one of those men in whom the Bench have the most perfect confidence, and he always rendered to the presiding Judges the greatest possible assistance. 'JACK WANT,' as we all familiarly liked to call him, was respected and beloved by all, more particularly, perhaps, by the junior members, to whom he was always ready to give a helping hand; and I would say to those juniors that the nearer they walk in his footsteps the surer they will be of attaining that eminence which he enjoyed. Speaking for myself, I know I have lost one of the dearest of my friends, a friendship of which I have felt proud. I knew him when he was a boy, and before he thought of going to the Bar, and when he made up his mind to do so he entered my chambers as a pupil. Afterwards we practised side by side some 17 years, until I went on the Bench as Chief Justice. He was then Attorney-General. In political life he was a tower of strength, broad-minded and far-seeing, but with that aspect of his life, valuable as it was to his country, we have here no concern. Suffice it to say that the Bar of New South Wales suffers a grievous loss, while New South Wales is this day rendered poorer by the untimely death of a man she can ill spare. Our sympathies flow to his widow and family, and I pray that the Almighty may in his own good time alleviate their sorrow and assuage their grief." |
