PREFACE

THIS issue of the Year's Work includes articles on Papyrology and Roman Britain, for which important subjects space could not be found last year.

It should be understood that the Year's Work does not profess to deal with works published later than June in the year in which it appears.

I take this opportunity of thanking, among others who have sent me copies of new classical publications, more especially the Oxford and Cambridge University Presses; the American Philological Association (Middletown, Connecticut), the editor Dr. Charles Knapp of the Classical Weekly published by the Classical Association of the Atlantic States (New York), the Association Guillaume Budé, publishers of the "Les Belles Lettres' series (Paris), and the Fundació Bernat Metge (Barcelona).

The French (Budé) and Spanish (Metge) collections, provided with critically revised texts and exact translations in fine literary style, demonstrate the great and ever increasing popularity of the ancient writers existing at present in the Latin races, which affords encouragement and inspiration to all lovers of the Classics. The beautiful typography of those two series, especially the Spanish, cannot fail by its charm to attract the sympathetic reader.

S. G. O.
