Principal establishments having connection with these sewers are the following:

Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Company's gas works on North Sixth street. The waste from these works is small. Drains into

sewer.

Henry Kerper tannery, Second and Chestnut streets, has connection with sewer, into which all waste water from tanning hides empties.

Reading Soap and Candle Works, W. K. Leman, proprietor, Second and Washington streets, discharges into the sewer a large quantity of spent lye and other material.

Lauer Brewing Company, Limited, Third and Chestnut streets, waste water from washing kegs, and also from porter and ale house empty into sewer.

W. P. Deppens Spring Garden Brewery, Chestnut and Tenth streets, waste water from brewery and malt house runs in gutters to a creek entering river at foot of South street.

Keystone Brewery, Fourth and Ash streets, waste water has special connection with public sewer.

J. G. Leinbach & Company's woolen mill on North Fourth street, waste material consists of various dyes, rosin, soda ash, etc., empties into sewer.

Between Reading and Port Clinton there are no pollutions of any consequence, except that which comes from agriculture. At Shoemakersville a small tannery drains into a creek about 20 rods from river; is not running at present time.

Between Reading and Douglassville there are almost no sources of pollution except from agriculture. The greatest is at Birdsboro, where 20 houses have indirect drainage into Hay creek. And E. and G. Brooks' nail works have privies over Hay creek for about 400 Not running at present time. The houses belong to E. G. Brook, Birdsboro.

SECOND INSPECTION AT READING.

To the Secretary of the State Board of Health:

Sir: I have the honor to report that in compliance with instructions received from you July 20, 1898, I visited the Schuylkill river on August 1st and 2d, and found the following conditions to exist:

Fox & Co., Reading glass works, Reading, Pa., have privy imme diately over the canal which is used by about 48 men and boys.

Peter Barbey's brewery office, Court street, between Fourth and Fifth, waste water from cleaning vats and barrels, and general cleaning, runs into the canal by sewer. The brewery is about 300 feet from canal.

E. S. Fox & Co., terra cotta works, corner of Front and Franklin street, Reading, Pa., has a privy which is situated about 10 feet from canal, which drains into it.

Reading Paper Mill Company, office corner of Front and Court streets, Reading, Pa., has two mills. The lower mill situated at Canal and Bingaman streets. All waste material from making paper and sewerage from 60 operatives empties into canal.

The upper mill situated at Front and Court streets, discharges its waste material into canal. Its outhouses do not empty into the canal.

McHose & Co., fire brick works, Canal street near Fourth, Reading, Pa., has a privy about 10 feet from canal over a well, which drains into canal when water is high.

Eckert & Co., Canal street, Reading, Pa., fire brick works, has a privy over canal. Works closed at present time.

H. S. Getz & Co., marble works, Canal street, Reading, Pa., has privies about 15 feet from canal emptying into sewer, which sewer empties into canal.

Hendel, Bro., Sons & Co., Fifth street near Laurel, Reading, Pa. It is one of the largest hat industries in Reading. The waste water
