FUEL AND SUPPLIES ELECTRIC CURRENT Electric current consumed in Everett for power and lighting is generated by the steam and hydro-electric plants of the Puget Sound Power & Light Co., which have a combined rated capacity of 319,745 kilowatts. Facilities for the use of electricity are available at the commercial wharves. The current generated is alternating, 60 cycle, 110 volt, or multiples thereof. Charges for current and installation are at cost plus 20 percent. (Base price, 4 cents per kilowatt-hour). WATER SUPPLY The source of Everett's water supply is the Sultan River, a branch of the Skykomish River, about 20 miles from the city. The system, which is owned by the city of Everett, has an available delivery capacity of 110,000,000 gallons per day of 24 hours. The entire quantity used is sterilized at a chlorine gas plant and is satisfactory for drinking and steaming purposes. Distribution is effected to all sections of the water front by 12-inch mains in which the pressure is from 110 to 125 pounds. This pressure results in a delivery capacity of approximately 12,000 gallons per hour through 11⁄2-inch hose and of 32,000 gallons per hour through 2-inch hose. Water is available to vessels at the commercial wharves and at plant A of the Weyerhaeuser Lumber Co. Charges at the Oriental dock, the Everett dock and warehouse, and the Washington City dock (pier No. 2) for fresh water furnished to vessels are 12 cents per ton of 32 cubic feet, minimum charge, $10. Use of hose is included in these rates. OIL BUNKERING The General Petroleum Corporation maintains adequate facilities for furnishing fuel and Diesel oils and gasoline to ships at their facilities located at the foot of California Street and also at the Oriental dock (pier No. 3), which adjoins their pier. Large vessels use the Oriental dock facility while small vessels frequent the general petroleum dock. Eight steel tanks provide storage for fuel and Diesel oils and gasoline, and are connected with three intake pipe lines which have diameters of 6 and 4 inches. The normal quantity kept in stock is as follows: Fuel oil, 15,000 barrels; Diesel oil, 4,000 barrels; and gasoline, 22,500 gallons. Two fuel outlets with 4-inch standard connections are located on Oriental dock (pier No. 3) and are available to vessels desiring bunker oil. This facility can furnish vessels with fuel oil at the rate of 400 barrels, Diesel oil, 100 barrels, and gasoline, 1,500 gallons per hour. The Standard Oil Co. operates a small wharf on Port Gardner Bay, at the foot of Everett Avenue, for the receipt of gasoline and distillate to be used by small boats. A normal supply of 350 barrels of 27°+ Diesel oil is also maintained for bunkering purposes. COAL BUNKERING There are no coal bunkering facilities in the port of Everett. Steam coal can be obtained in Seattle or in Victoria, British Columbia. Galley coal can be secured from local yards, sacked or in bulk. |
