of them have already appeared in the "North British " and the "Westminster" Reviews. It will be seen at a glance that I have not attempted a complete or systematic review of Greek Poetry. My purpose has been to select special points for treatment; nor have I aimed at an exhaustive discussion of the subjects which I have selected. To bring Greek literature home to the general reader, and to apply to the Greek poets the same sort of criticism as that which modern classics receive, has been my principal object. It is possible that, with this aim in view, I may have been led into extravagances of style-especially in the Essays on Pindar, Aristophanes, and the Idyllic Poets. But I feel that in dealing with material so thoroughly investigated by scholars and historians, some such divergence from received methods of treatment is excusable in a critic
