Armelle Debru
Brill, 1997 - Architecture - 336 pages
Only four of the 14 papers are in English, the others being in French as is the preface. They shed light of the pharmacology of the second- century Greek physician who worked at the court of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, and how it relates to the entire body of his work and thought. They consider the general themes of the epistemology, method, and practice of medicine; Galen and pharmacological tradition; and his pharmacological treatises and the transmission of texts. The English papers cover his use of the concept of qualified experience in his dietetic and pharmacological works; inefficacy, error, and failure; the authenticity of the treatise on theriac; and science and magic in his recipes.
