HOISTING EQUIPMENT - ASHORE AND AFLOAT

There are 44 heavy-lift, traveling, container cranes having lift capacities ranging between 30 and 50 tons at the Port of Long Beach, and 46 at the Port of Los Angeles, ranging in capacity from 331⁄2 to 50 tons.

Manson Construction & Engineering owns and operates two diesel crawler cranes with lift capacities of 60 and 150 tons available for use at the ports when not engaged in marine construction operations. Details of the above-outlined hoisting equipment are given in the table beginning on page 168.

Cranes, derricks, and special-handling equipment at other waterfront facilities within the port area are usually for the sole use of the operating companies, and are described under "Mechanical Handling Facilities" in the table of "Piers, Wharves, and Docks," beginning on page 75. No floating cranes or derricks for making heavy lifts at shipside are based in the area.

MARINE REPAIR PLANTS AND DRYDOCKING FACILITIES

Six companies operate waterfront facilities at the ports for the repair and conversion of oceangoing vessels, tugs, barges, and other types of vessels. Southwest Marine, Inc. provides conversion services while the remaining five primarily engage in making repairs to small vessels.

Five floating drydocks and nine marine railways are located at the waterfront marine repair plants in the Port of Los Angeles. Lifting capacities of the floating drydocks range from 1,100 to 16,000 tons; haul-out capacities of the marine railways range from 10 to 1,100 tons.

The table of "Marine Repair Plants and Drydocking Equipment" beginning on page 172 describes these facilities in detail.

The port area also has a number of plants without waterfront facilities which are engaged in various types of marine repair work. These companies maintain shops and portable equipment for making above-waterline repairs, and for installing equipment, gear, and machinery on all types of craft at berth. In addition, there are repair plants which are operated solely for the repair and maintenance of company-owned floating equipment and for recreational craft.

FLOATING EQUIPMENT

Floating equipment based at the Ports of Long Beach, Los Angeles, and Port Hueneme includes 26 tugs and towboats, with ratings up to 7,000 horsepower, used for towing, docking, undocking, and shifting vessels; and 14 tank barges, with cargo-carrying capacities ranging up to 30,400 barrels, used for delivering bunker fuel and one for delivering fresh water to vessels at berth or at anchor in the harbor. The table of "Floating Equipment" on pages 177 and 178 describes this equipment in detail.

Other companies operating this type of equipment for their own use or in transportation service are not included in this report.
