RIVER AND CANAL TRAFFIC IN 1910.

Downstream traffic at Lock No. 3 on the Monongahela River, representing the maximum downstream movement on the river, of which practically all was soft coal, totalled 9,138,196 short tons, a quantity slightly smaller than the year before and over a million tons below the total for the 1907 season, which marks the largest coal shipments through the lock. The upstream traffic for the year at Lock No. 1 of the river, representing the maximum upstream movement, and composed of sand and gravel mainly, totalled 1,329,919 short tons, and shows a similar decrease. An interesting recent development is the growth of iron and steel products by that river, which for the first time shows an annual total in excess of 100,000 tons at this Jock. River traffic in both directions by way of Davis Island Dam totalled 3,138,074 short tons for the year, compared with 3,819,705 short tons in 1909, the decline being due chiefly to the smaller shipments of coal.

The 1910 traffic on the Kanawha River, Lock No. 11, and over the falls and the Louisville and Portland Canal of the Ohio River at Louisville, Ky., 1,262,986 short tons and 1,090,229 short tons, respectively, the greater part of which is made up of coal, also shows a decrease as compared with the preceding year's_total.

A considerable growth of tonnage for the year is shown for the Big Sandy River, Ky., and the Cumberland River, Tenn., while traffic movements on the Green River, Ky., and the Little Kanawha River show considerable declines since 1909.

The arrivals by river during the year at Cairo, Ill., at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, totalled 5,875 vessels, of 3,202,910 net tons, indicating a decrease of 22 per cent in the number of vessels and of 27 per cent in the vessel tonnage recorded at that point, as compared with the average figures for the preceding five-year period.

The year's freight tonnage received and shipped by river at St. Louis, 191,965 short tons, was the lowest on record, owing mainly to the smaller receipts of coal by way of the Ohio River.

The Erie Canal tonnage for the year, 2,023,185 short tons, also shows a slight decrease since the preceding year, and the same is true of the traffic carried on all New York State canals, the 1910 total of 3,073,412 short tons being the lowest for the decade, except for the year 1908. For traffic over the Erie Canal and the other New York State canals see under "New York State."

FREIGHT TRANSPORTED ON VARIOUS RIVERS AND CANALS FOR CALENDAR YEARS 1908-'10.

[blocks in formation]

The total receipts of the United Railways and Electric Company of Baltimore for dule the calendar year 1910 were $7,687,894 and the number of paying

passengers carried daily averaged about 425,000.
