Peter Matthiessen's thoughtful prose with photos by Eliot Porter, a gentle and powerful introduction to Africa. Read full review

Matthiessen, who died earlier this year, wrote The Tree Where Man Was Born about his experiences in East Africa in the late 1960's. Like the best travel, adventure writing it is clear sighted and poetic. But, lucky for us, the poetry comes first. This is a wonderful read. Read full review

A phenomenal ground-level tour of eastern Africa as told by the only writer ever to win the National Book Award for both fiction and non-fiction. I am thinking of traveling to this part of the world ... Read full review

This one's a mixed bag, with long sections describing the ethnology of the various tribes and peoples in places totally obscure to me, which I found tough to follow. Am I glad though, that I did not ... Read full review

A very interesting read. Part travelogue, part geography lesson, part history. Not 'edge of your seat' reading, but I'm glad I read it. Read full review

The Tree Where Man Was Born (The African Trilogy #1) by Peter Matthiessen (Dutton Books 1972) (916.04+/-). Peter Matthiessen uses words and photos to describe that harmony of East Africa and its animals. My rating: 7/10, finished 11/24/14. Read full review

I'm on a Peter Matthiessen kick now, after having read Shadow Country. There's not a lot of form to this book, but it describes his travels through East Africa, and highlights his amazing descriptive powers. A slow read, but well worth the time. Read full review
