The "Public Schools' Act, 1877."

(Passed April 18th, 1877.)

The Lieutenant Governor, Council and Assembly enact as follows:

The following words and terms shall, in this Interpretation Act, mean as herein defined, unless there is something in the context repugnant thereto :"District," that portion of the territory into

II. The Members of the Executive Council, the Principal of the Prince of Wales College and the Chief Superintendent of Education, shall constitute a Board of Education for the Province. Five members of the Executive Council and the Chief Superintendent, who shall act as Secretary, shall form a quorum.

III. The Board of Education shall have power:

(a) To provide for the establishing and efficient working of a Normal School with model departments; to appoint a Principal for the same at a salary of one thousand two hundred dollars per annum, payable quarterly, and such assistants as may be found necessary, and to make such allowances for the travelling expenses of pupil teachers attending the School as shall be deemed proper, not exceeding twelve dollars.

(b) To appoint three Inspectors, and as far as practicable, each County shall constitute an

Inspectoral District, and the Board shall have power to prescribe the qualifications for Inspectors, and their duties when not herein prescribed, and to provide for the uniform Certification of all candidates for the same; and the sum of two thousand dollars shall be annually appropriated for the salaries of such Inspectors, to be apportioned as the Lieutenant Governor in Council may determine.
