N sending this little work to press the Author

makes no pretension to journalistic pedagogy. He does not claim to supply a complete course of instruction in the profession of journalism. The poet is born, not made; but the journalist can only hope to attain to eminence in his profession by diligence in its practice, and by constant practical endeavour to excel. At starting, he must be well educated, and he must ever keep himself at school, being always quick to note and willing to learn. At the same time, however, the Author hopes his HANDBOOK will be found helpful to young men who contemplate joining the profession, and wish to qualify themselves for it, as well as to those who, having already enlisted in the service, are honourably ambitious of achieving distinction in the sphere of active life which
