SCHOOLS FOR THE BLIND AND THE DEAF. Tables 1 to 6 present the statistics of school for the blind. This bureau has a record of 71 schools for the blind in the United States. Of these, 58 are controlled directly by the State or by corporations which receive pupils at the expense of the State, 10 are under the control of the city boards of education, and 3 are privately controlled. Only 61 schools for the blind reported to this office in 1916. These schools employed 687 teachers and enrolled 5,155 pupils. Property valued at $14,659,506 was reported by 48 schools, while 51 schools reported an aggregate expenditure of $2,009,693, including $214,906 expended for buildings and improvements. The per capita cost of maintenance and instruction was almost $380, or about $20 more than in 1915. Tables 7 to 15 present the statistics of 159 schools for the deaf. Of these schools 69 were State schools or received pupils at the expense of the State; 71 were public day schools controlled by city boards of education; and 19 were private schools. These schools employed 1,941 teachers and enrolled 14, 733 pupils. Of the State schools 66 schools reported property valued at $21,041,425, and 65 schools reported an aggregate expenditure of $3,850,476, of which $324,727 was expended for buildings and improvements. The per capita cost of instruction and maintenance in State schools for the deaf averaged $318, or nearly $20 a year more than in 1915. 645 |
