The CHAIRMAN. Now, if you will proceed.

Mayor KNOX. Is Senator McCarthy here?

The CHAIRMAN. Senator McCarthy is right here.

Mayor KNOX. Senator, I should like first to attempt to clear up any misunderstanding that may have been made by some conflicting testimony here this morning.

With reference to the 59,000,000,000 gallons of water in storage in San Diego County, that figure is correct. However, that figure does not represent that water which is usable by the city of San Diego and/or the county water authority.

Going back through the years, as the city of San Diego grew, she had to go out and take in water systems that had been developed by groups of farmers as irrigation districts, whereby they themselves financed and constructed their own reservoirs. When the city wanted to buy it had to give them certain guaranties of continuing supplies of water in order to purchase those systems.

So, the result is that the figure that was mentioned this morning of 59,000,000,000 gallons of water in storage is substantially correct according to our hydraulic engineers. However, it does not necessarily mean that the conclusion to which you were drawn that there was an 800-day supply for the area could possibly be included as a part of the fact.

Senator MCCARTHY. If I may interrupt as we go along-do I understand that the total output from all of the reservoirs in question is, roughly, 30,000,000 gallons a day and over?

Mayor KNOX. Are you talking about net safe yield or output?
Senator MCCARTHY. The output.

Mayor KNOX. Yes, sir. We are drawing that now.

Senator MCCARTHY. That includes the amount used by the farmers? Mayor KNOX. No, sir.

Senator MCCARTHY. It does not?

Mayor KNOX. No, sir. That is the city of San Diego.

Senator MCCARTHY. And how much additional water is being drawn from these reservoirs?

Mayor KNOX. I should like to mention the districts. I do not have those figures, but I can, as we go down through the different reservoirs, explain the percentage of water to which we are entitled.

The CHAIRMAN. Can you tell us what the area of the city of San Diego is?

Mayor KNOX. The area?

The CHAIRMAN. Yes.

Mayor KNOX. We have 94 square miles, sir. We have no large farms within that area, no irrigation districts within that area. The only irrigation projects we have, sir, are the project of the housewife who has a lawn in front of her home.

Senator THYE. You mean there are no orchards, Mayor, or tracts of 2, 3, 4, or 5 acres that are now being supplied with water from that same source?

Mayor KNOX. Relatively few.

Senator THYE. But you do admit that there are some and that there are some projects that are now being developed?

Mayor KNOX. I know of none within the city of San Diego.

Senator THYE. None that are being supplied water in this manner?
