GRAIN ELEVATORS

There are no grain elevators at Jacksonville.

STORAGE WAREHOUSES

There are 14 storage warehouses at Jacksonville which have a total floor space of 801,312 square feet and an aggregate storage space of about 9,000,000 cubic feet. These warehouses are generally in close proximity to the water front and interchange is made between ship and warehouse by railroad or motortrucks, usually by the latter method.

The largest warehouse in the group is that of the Union Terminal Warehouse Co., located on East Union and Ionia Streets, which has four floors and a basement with a total area of 333,685 square feet and a storage space of 3,120,000 cubic feet, and is used for the storage of general merchandise. It is a reinforced concrete structure and is equipped with an automatic sprinkler system.

With the exception of about 28,500 square feet of floor area and 332,500 cubic feet of storage space, the warehouse facilities at the port are used for the dry storage of goods. Cold storage is provided by Armour & Co. in its brick and concrete warehouse on Talleyrand Avenue, about 95 percent of its floor area and cubical dimensions of 30,000 square feet and 350,000 cubic feet, respectively, being devoted to the cold storage of fish, meats, fruits, vegetables, and other perishable commodities. Temperatures as low as 10° below zero can be maintained.

The Municipal Cotton Warehouse & Compress building on Talleyrand Avenue is equipped with an 80-inch Webb high density press. Storage space in this structure aggregates 56,832 square feet, or 504,000 cubic feet. In addition to cotton, other general merchandise is stored. With the exception of the Armour & Co. cold-storage plant and Florida Warehouse & Forwarding Co. warehouse, the latter being used for the storage of newsprint paper, cement, grain and food products, and building materials, the warehouse space at the port is largely devoted to the storage of general merchandise and food products. In general, the warehouses mentioned are principally used for miscellaneous local storage and only to a limited extent for goods received or shipped by water.
