That brings me to the point of discussion in connection with the estimates that are before you. This morning one of the members of the committee intimated that he would like a comparison of the estimates now before you with the appropriations that have been made over a period of several years. I had prepared in advance a comparative statement of appropriations, by fiscal years, from 1932 through 1937, and the estimates that are included in this bill. The total estimate for the Indian Service from Treasury appropria tions for 1938 is $33,225,864.85, and from tribal funds it is $1,139.69. I offer that comparative statement for printing in the record. (The paper referred to is as follows:) Mr. JOHNSON. Mr. Dodd, I have not yet examined that statemen May I ask if it shows the requests that you made to the Budget, k construction purposes? Mr. DODD. That statement does not show the total requests we made of the Bureau of the Budget. I have with me a statement whic I thought would be discussed at the time we reached the construction item further over in the bill. Mr. JOHNSON. Very well; we will discuss it at that time. NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES IN WASHINGTON AND THE FIELD Mr. DODD. You raised a question this morning as to the number people we had in the Washington office. I counted that up during th recess and found that we have a total of only 282, whereas we have field force of about 6,300. I thought maybe you would be interested having that information. Mr. JOHNSON. Yes; we desire that information. Mr. DODD. We don't feel that it is out of proportion at all to the massive field service that we have. INCREASES IN ESTIMATE FOR 1938 Mr. DODD. I will now take up the increases in appropriation. Mr. RICH. That is for the year 1938? Mr. DODD. Yes; for the fiscal year 1938 the requested increase in appropriations from the Federal Treasury is $5,070,169.39. I offer for printing in the record a statement explaining briefly the various increases.
