THEN they that were in the ship came

and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.

And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;

And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.-Matt. xiv. 33-36.

LORD, how great's the favour,

That we, such sinners poor,
Can, through thy death's sweet savour,
Approach thy mercy's door:
And find an open passage

Unto the throne of grace:
There wait the welcome message
Which bids us go in peace.
Lord, we are helpless creatures,
Full of the deepest need;
Throughout defil'd by nature,
Stupid, and inly dead.

FLETCHER'S Coll. Hymn 218, Part 1.

RLESSED Jesus, I adore thee in thy divinity, and acknowledge thee in thy humanity. Teach me to believe, admire, and enjoy the glorious mystery, "The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us." Thy disciples beheld the mystery, and "saw thy glory, as the glory of the Only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth." Thou art the "brightness of the Father's glory, and the express image of his person." Come, holy Spirit, with thy gracious power, and fill my soul with a loving, adoring admiration of the loveliness of Christ. Ever, ever, may I look upon him as the bright and Morning Star, and as the Sun of righteousness. As Mediator, thou hast purchased for thyself great glory, by thine obedience, sufferings, and death. Teach me to rejoice, with great joy, that thou hast received from the Father thy mediatorial reward, even "honour and glory," when there came such a voice from the excellent Glory, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." Enable me to think with the deepest interest on the displays of thy glory during the days of thy humiliation on earth. Fill my heart with wonder and love, when I read of the glory of thy power, condescension, and mercy, in the miraculous cures performed on the sick, the lame, the dying, and on those who were possessed of infuriated demons.

My God and Father, accept of thanks for all the instances of thy paternal goodness this day. May my beloved parents, and all our family, enjoy this night thy kind protection and care. Mercifully hear, accept, and forgive, for Jesus' sake. Amen.

GREAT

THAT thy statutes every hour

Might dwell upon my mind!
Thence I derive a quick'ning pow'r,
And daily peace I find.
To meditate thy precepts, Lord,
Shall be my sweet employ;
My soul shall ne'er forget thy word;

Thy word is all my joy.

How would I run in thy commands,

If thou my heart discharge
From sin and Satan's hateful chains,
And set my feet at large!

WATTS, Ps. cxix. Part 15.

REAT and glorious Jehovah, give me that faith by which I shall hear and apply these words falling from the lips of thy mercy, “I am the Lord thy God." Praise to thy name for these precious words; by faith may I pluck, taste, and enjoy their nourishing, reviving, and strengthening fruit: "The Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly." Lord, teach me to walk uprightly this day, and every day of my earthly pilgrimage. At all times, and in all places, let it be my determination, in the strength of divine grace, to run in the way of thy commandments. Never suffer me to turn to the right hand or to the left. Let it ever be the purpose and the joy of my heart, "to walk in all the ordinances and commandments of the Lord, blameless." Never may I fall into the dreadful sin of performing good works to merit heaven. O Jesus, thy righteousness alone has purchased heaven. By divine grace, may I, my dear parents, and all our household, serve God from love, trusting in the atonement of Jesus alone for salvation, heaven, and immortality.

As Jacob vowed to the Lord, teach me to vow unto the Lord, saying, "In the strength of divine grace, I engage to renounce the service of the devil, the world, and the flesh: I engage to be only and wholly the Lord's."

Receive my thanks for the mercies of the past night. Hear my prayer, for Jesus' sake. Amen.

BUT those things which proceed out

of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.

For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.-Matt. xv. 18-20.

MY

Y heart, how dreadful hard it is!
How heavy here it lies!
Heavy and cold within my breast,
Just like a rock of ice.
Sin, like a raging tyrant, sits

Upon this flinty throne,'
And every grace lies buried deep
Beneath this heart of stone.
How seldom do I rise to God,

Or taste the joys above!
This mountain presses down my faith,
And chills my flaming love.
WATTS, Bk. ii. Hymn 98.

AT the close of the week I desire with thankfulness and filial fear to approach thy mercy-seat, and present my evening sacrifice. In this holy service, and in the enjoyment of this great and honourable privilege, may I be taught to say from the heart, "Truly, my fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son, Jesus Christ." In the holy services of the closet may I, and my beloved parents, with my dear brothers and sisters, be enabled to say, "This is the house of God; this is the gate of heaven."

Lord, thou art omniscient, and knowest all the sins of my thoughts, words, and actions. Oh give me repentance! oh bestow upon me forgiveness! "Though my sins be as scarlet, make them as snow." Thou knowest the natural hardness and depravity of my heart. None knoweth fully the heart but thyself. Lord, renew my heart; make the hardened heart soft; make my polluted heart holy; make my heart of enmity a heart of love.

may

For the mercies of the day, and for the blessings of the week, accept my humble thanks. On the morning of the approaching Sabbath, I awake strengthened and prepared for the ordinances and duties of thy sacred day. May the unction of thy Holy One descend on all the churches, and may their sanctuaries be filled with thy glory. Hear my feeble prayers, for Jesus' sake. Now to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost be ascribed glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and for evermore. Amen.

E sent from above, he took me, he HE forms our generals for the field,

НЕ

drew me out of many waters.

He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hated me: for they were too strong for me.

They prevented me in the day of my calamity but the Lord was my stay:

He brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me.-Ps. xviii. 16—19.

With all their dreadful skill; Gives them his awful sword to wield,

And makes their hearts of steel.
[He arms our captains to the fight
(Though there his name 's forgot):
He girded Cyrus with his might,
But Cyrus knew him not.

Oft has the Lord whole nations bless'd,
For his own church's sake;
The pow'rs that give his people rest
Shall of his care partake.]

WATTS, PS. xviii. Part 1.

LORD God of hosts, thou art the Supporter, the Defender, and the Deliverer of thy people. When Israel suffered cruel bondage in Egypt, thou didst say to them in thy great mercy, "I am come down to deliver my people out of the hands of the Egyptians." And thou didst deliver them with a strong hand, and a stretched out arm. Thou didst wonderfully appear as the deliverer of David, which led him to sing sweetly and triumphantly, "The Lord delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the power of the bear."

Blessed Jesus, be to me my strength and my shield; deliver me from the power of my own corruptions; deliver me from the powers of Satan, which goeth about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour; deliver me from the power of the world, by which thousands are cut down and perish. Mercifully say, respecting my beloved parents, my brothers and sisters, myself and all I love, "Deliver from going down to the pit, for I have found a ransom.” Let many captives be set free this day, by means of a preached gospel.

Thanks to my God for my preservation through the past night. May this Sabbath be a blessed Sabbath to my soul. Let me ever remember with the deepest interest the resurrection of Jesus, which took place on the morning of the Sabbath-day. And may be enabled to remember with great joy, that Jesus rose as the first-fruits of them who sleep. Oh teach me to say, because he rose, I also shall rise from the tomb. Graciously hear the voice of my supplication, for Jesus' sake. Amen.

MOST merciful God, I adore thee as infinite and unchangeable in

all thy perfections. Holy Spirit, graciously open the eyes of my understanding, that I may see the glory of God in the works of creation, in the works of providence, and in the most wonderful work of redemption. Oh give me the unspeakable privilege and blessing of seeing the glory of God in the face of Jesus!

Follow with thy richest blessing the religious ordinances which have been observed this day throughout all the churches. By thy gospel, accompanied by the power of thy Spirit, may multitudes be delivered from the bondage of sin, and receive the liberty of grace. May they be separated from the family of Satan, and admitted into the family of Jesus. May many trophies be added to the victories. of Jesus. May those who are now the enemies of Jesus be made his loving subjects. May this be the day of the Redeemer's power.

Thou mighty Saviour, thou King of kings, reign in the hearts of my beloved parents, and in the hearts of all the members of our family. Take to thyself thy great power, and extend thy mediatorial reign over all the nations of the earth, and all the islands of the sea. Soon, "Let the people praise thee, let all the people praise thee."

Accept my feeble thanks for all the mercies of this sacred day. Continue thy providential care and kindness this night. My God and Father, hear my supplications, for Jesus' sake. Amen.
