What did the President really know about Watergate? What was his role in the coverup? In May, 1973, the Senate Select Committee on Presidential Activities, the Ervin Committee, began its televised public hearings. The nation watched such witnesses as John Dean, John Mitchell and H. R. Haldeman give their versions of the Watergate breakin and coverup. Here, in this Report, is the Committee's answers to what happened and why. It is presented complete, with a special introduction by Daniel Schorr, Washington Correspondent of CBS News. This is the document you must have as you make up your mind about Watergate, Richard Nixon and impeachment. "Counsel Dash says that perhaps ninety per cest of the information of the House [Judiciary] Committee came from the Senate Committee." -from the Introduction by Daniel Schorr Publisher's Note This two-volume Dell edition contains the text of the threevolume Report as released by the Senate Select Committee to the press. (The complete table of contents appears in both volumes.) Two changes have been made in the sequence of chapters. The Committee's Chapter VIII, Hughes-Rebozo, has been made Chapter IV in this edition, with the other chapters renumbered accordingly. The original Chapter XI, statements by Committee members, has been placed at the head of Volume One-with the exception of Senator Weicker's extensive report, which is made a separate section. Though not a part of the official report, the Minority Report submitted at the request of Senator Baker, concerning CIA involvement in the Watergate affair, has been included. At the time of public release, certain exhibits had not yet been paged, although they are referred to in the text; at such places, the citations are left incomplete as in the Committee Report. ("Exhibit 000" and "p. 000" are used to represent incomplete references.) As to style: within the Report, there are variations in the form of footnoting, quoting, etc., along with some minor textual inaccuracies. For the most part these have been retained, in order to avoid undue delay in publication and to preserve faithfulness to the original text.
