RIDDLE.

My owner who loves me almost as his soul
With his fair one yet ventures to leave me,
He loses me quite, she possesses the whole,
Yet she never was known to receive me.
In a casket enshrin'd with abundance of care,
From all harm you would think me secure,
At least that no very great ills were my share
So long as the shrine should endure.
Yet oft in a terrible flame I'm involv'd
When the casket can scarce be call'd warm,
As by lightning they tell us a sword is dissolv'd,
Yet the scabbard shall suffer no harm.

BRIGHTON HERMIT.

THE RUBBER.

(By Captain Collins.)

The hour employ'd at tea being o'er,
(The noisiest in twenty-four)
Scandal and politics suspended,
And each has charming converse ended,
John sets the table, cards appear,
And enter-Int'rest, Hope, and Fear.
The different lots are drawn, to shew,
In this strange combat, friend from foe.
Their parties made, they take their seats,
Declare their play, and name their bets.
All mov'd by Int'rest, now proceed-

And-"You're to deal." "Then I'm to lead.”—

I would invoke my gentle muse,

T'explain each quaint-coin'd phrase they use;
But know, my pray'r would not be heard,
My gentle muse near touch'd a card.

-

The cards are dealt-the trump display'd Signal for fight-" Who led the spade?""Those clubs have answerd"-"Aye, a curse.""I hope those hearts will do no worse." "How hot the room! my face is burn'd.""That trick again, before it's turn'd.""I'm puzzled now-I do protest

I think that di'mond is the best."

(And up he casts his eyes, appealingTo what? Why-look again-the ceiling.) "We've got the trick-had you an honour ?""Yes, I'd the queen; for, fie upon her,

I almost blush at what I tell,

She fell, alas! to your king fell!"

Well, how are honours

equal, say you ?

Then deal again—and, Madam, play you.'
The other party now advance,

As fav'rites of the goddess Chance ;
For they who lost the trick before,
Now save their luck, and add two more.
This rais'd their hope, dispell'd their fear.
Express'd by laughter, noise and sneer.
But short their glory, short their fame,
The others win a single game.

Now Int'rest waxes warm apace—
The cards are shuffled-" Cut! an ace !"
"An ace-
—fore gad—'tis very plain,

You slip the cards-let's deal again."
"The deal is right, attend your play."-

[ocr errors]

S'death, Ma'am, you throw the game awayAnd, what is worse, my money too!

I ne'er, again, will play with you."
"Be patient, Sir; for, had you play'd-"
"Patient, indeed! see what they've made!
They'll call next time, and will be out:
You ne'er had luck-'tis past a doubt."

Would it not have been wrong, to balk
One who could thus prophetic talk?
The cards were dealt-the honours came-
They triumph'd in a double game.
The patient did the peevish drub,
A single, double, and the rub.
