On Friday, January, 3, some children being left together in a house on Fishbourne Green, one of them six years old, named Jane Chalfield, had her clothes set on fire, and ran into the road enveloped in flames. Assistance was promptly afforded, but it was of no avail, as the child was so dreadfully scorched that she died almost immediately. The same afternoon, a like misfortune befel a poor child, about eight years old, of the name of Glue, in Tower-street, Chichester, whose mother had only left the room to buy an egg, when endeavouring to keep a younger sister from the fire, the poker fell out, and set her clothes in a flame ; a neighbour ran in on hearing the screams of the children, and threw a bucket of water over the little creature; but we regret to say not till it had heen too much burnt to survive.

DESPERATE ACTION BETWEEN A REVENUE CRUIZER AND A SMUGGLER. Mr. Henry Wingfield, Chief Mate of His Majesty's

revenue cutter Badger, arrived at Dover, on Tuesday se'nnight, (as Prize Master), with a very fine cutter or dandy, named the Three Brothers. It appears that on Monday morning, the Badger, whilst cruising, fell in with a suspicious sail between Boulogne and Etaples, about three leagues from the land, and suspecting her to be a smuggler, made all sail in chase; at the same time firing a gun to bring her to, and hoisting the ensign and pendant. The cutter finding the Badger gaining on her, fired her stern chaser, The action then became general and lasted from half-past seven a. m. until half-past one p. m. and after a running fight of six hours and a half, the cutter struck about six leagues from Dieppe. Upon boarding her she proved to be the Three Brothers, as above stated, sailing from Flushing to the Faro Isles, having a valuable cargo of tea, tobacco, and spirits on board, intended for illicit importation, and carrying twenty-seven men, four six-pound carronades, besides swivels and an immense quantity of fire-arms. On board the smuggler, the Captain and one man were killed, and seven (two mortally, one of whom died the next morning) wounded. On board the Badger, Mr. Cullum, Deputation Officer, was killed, and Lieutenant Nazer, her Commander, the Second Mate, and three men were wounded.-A more desperate action has not been fought between a revenue cruizer and a smuggler for some time.

GOOD SHOTS.-Mr. James Corney, of Littlehampton, shot, with one charge, from a fowling-piece, thirteen sea-gulls in a field, near that place and a few days ago, Mr. Holmes, jun. of North Farm, Findon, at one shot killed ten rooks, a hen pheasant, and a pigeon.

General Dorrien, of Lavant Park has reduced the rents of his tenantry 20 per cent. It must be observed, that this truly laudable act was unsolicited.

ADVANTAGES OF EARLY RISING. The difference between rising every morning at six, and at eight, in the course of forty years, supposing a man to go to bed at the same time he otherwise would, amounts to twenty-nine thousand hours; or three years, one hundred and twenty days, and sixteen hours; so that that is the same as if ten years of life (a weighty consideration) were added, in which we could command eight hours every day, for the cultivation of our minds, or the dispatch of business.

BATTLE SONG OF Å GERMAN SOLDIER'S MISTRESS.

Go forth!-like the sun in his might;
Go forth-like the dawning of day:
May the plume on thy helm be the star of the fight,
And thy brand be the flash of the fray.

I love thee, yet ne'er be it said,

That love did thy spirit restrain;

I had rather behold thee a hero and dead,
Than a coward in life to remain.

Then "Forward and fear not!" thy battle-cry be,
With glory return, or return not to me!

I could joy o'er thy corse, though my tears
Should wash the red wounds Death had made;
For each crimson gash like a ruby appears,
On the front if it be but display'd.

But, oh! my soul never could bear

The thought that thou fled'st from the foe;
One scar on thy back would awaken despair,
And give to my heart its death-blow!

Then "Forward and fear not!" thy battle-cry be,
With glory return, and be welcome to me'

VOL, II

A FRAGMENT,

The sun had pass'd the mid-day height,
And verging to its place of rest,
In lines of heavenly colour'd light,
Adorn'd the distant glowing west.
