Faculties and Departments of the College all the fees are payable at the commencement of the First Term in which the Student enters. Junior Scholars are, in these also, exempted from the payment of one-half the class fees. In the case of Students of the First Year, the College fee only is required before the Matriculation Examination; and in the event of the Candidate failing to pass the Examination, the fee will be returned.

FACULTY OF ARTS.

THE DEGREES OF B.A. AND M.A.

1.-The Degree of Bachelor in Arts.

Candidates for the Degree of B.A. from the Queen's University, must on entering Queen's College, Galway, pass the following Matriculation Examination.

MATHEMATICS.

Arithmetic-Including Vulgar and Decimal Fractions, the Rule of Three, Simple Interest, and the Extraction of the Square Root.

Algebra-Including Fractions, Proportion, and the Solution of Simple Equations. Geometry-Euclid, Books I., II.

THE GREEK LANGUAGE.

Any one of the following authors which the candidate may select :

Homer-Iliad, Books I.—IV.
Xenophon-Anabasis, Books I.-III.
Lucian-Walker's Selections.

THE LATIN LANGUAGE.

Any one of the following authors which the candidate may select:

Virgil-Æneid, Books I.-V.

Horace Odes, Book I.; Satires, Book I.

Sallust-Conspiracy of Catiline, and Jugurthine War.

Cæsar-Gallic War, Books V., VI.

Re-translation from English into Latin of portions of Cæsar.

The Undergraduate Course for the Degree of B.A. occupies not less than three Sessions.

Students are admitted to the University Examination for this Degree who, after having passed the Matriculation Examination, have attended the College Lectures for at least two full terms in each Session, have passed the prescribed College Examinations, and are recommended for promotion to the Degree by the President of the College.

For a list of the subjects to be studied each Session, and of those for the Degree Examination, and for the conditions under which the Undergraduate Course may be extended to more than three Sessions, see p. 24.

* The Lectures on the English Language and in Logic may extend into the third term.

+ Excursions with the Professor of Natural History may take place on any Saturday of the third term, and will supersede the lectures of that day on Classics and Natural History, to Students of the second year.

Mathematical Students of the second year are allowed to attend the lectures on Natural Philosophy without having paid a class fee for the latter.-No certificate is issued for this attendance.

In Jurisprudence and Political Economy (third year). the following course is recommended for preliminary study:-Reddie's Inquiries in Law, Second Edition; Senior's Political Economy. The following Course is recommended for Honors:-Political Economy.-Smith's Wealth of Nations; Professor Cairnes' Character and Logical Method of Political Economy; Heron's Lectures on Taxation. Jurisprudence.-Lord Bacon's Tract on Universal Justice (translated by Heron); Lewis on the Government of Dependencies.

SCHOLARSHIPS.

Of the Thirty Junior Scholarships appropriated to Students in the Faculty of Arts

Fifteen are awarded for proficiency in Literature, viz. :— Five to Students of the First Year.

The Scholarships of the First Year are open to all Students who have passed the Matriculation Examination in Arts. Those of the second and third years are open to all Students who have passed the Examinations and attended the Lectures prescribed in the preceding part of their Course of Study.

If any student be placed, at the Examinations for Junior Scholarships in Arts, first on both the lists of Candidates, he is entitled to a Scholarship of each division; but in no other case can two Scholarships be held by the same Student.
