OXFORD.

PREFACE.

MY ENDEAVOUR has been to arrange in this volume a Reading Book for Schools which should put before the scholars the main points in Economic Science in a clear and intelligible form. Such an outline must obviously be imperfect in the sense that those portions of the subject which are too difficult for children to understand have necessarily been omitted. The student of Political Economy will, however, find in these pages what may be a stepping-stone to more advanced study.

I am particularly obliged to the Right Hon. Henry Fawcett and to Mrs. Fawcett for kind permission to make use of quotations from Mrs. Fawcett's 'Political Economy for Beginners;' to Mr. Alfred Marshall and to Mrs. Mary Paley Marshall, for a similar permission with respect to the 'Economics of Industry ;' to Professor Jevons for a similar permission from his 'Science Primer of Political Economy,' and to Messrs. Macmillan, the publishers of these works.

I have also to express my deep obligation to M. Maurice Block, who, with the utmost courtesy and liberality, has allowed me to translate his 'Petit Manuel d'Économie Pratique,' a truly admirable work of elementary teaching. It has been a real satisfaction to me to make it known in this country. I have also to thank Mr. Smiles, the proprietors of the 'British Workman,' and others, for leave to make extracts from their useful publications. In every case, the source from which the quotation has been derived is mentioned.

For the reader who desires to carry the study further, the names and descriptions of the books principally quoted are added.

R. H. INGLIS PALGRAVE.
