Let me begin with who I am. I was the Head of the Math Department at South Eugene High School where Greg Moo was a principal. I was also on the hiring committee which unfortunately didn't get to make the final decision. We were given 3 candidates, of which Greg Moo was one of the candidates. We ranked each person after interviewing them. Of the 3 candidates, Greg Moo was ranked last. We found that he had no experience with computers and kids. When we had the 3 candidates do a writing sample for us, the other two candidates answered their questions via computer. Greg Moo wrote his answer out long-hand which was almost impossible to read. He also made no references to the kids and educating them. His remarks were always made toward the re-structuring of the school and the departments. Greg Moo was already living in Eugene, the other two candidates were, one from Alaska and one from Maine. He was hired by the Eugene School District as principal since the district didn't want to pay out any money to relocate our top candidate, who was from Maine. And so we received our new principal by default.
To make the story shorter, when it came time for staffing decisions, I was called into his office and was told that since the math department was the biggest department in the school; our math staffing would drop 2 teachers. Now the math department is biggest department because we service about 96% of kids in grades 9 through 12. Since we had about 1800 students with 11 staff math staff numbers, our class loads already averaged 33 per class. When we were to lose 2 full-time members, the class loads would climb to an average of 40 per class, which is totally unacceptable. When I informed Greg Moo the problem, I was told by him: “You need to counsel students NOT to take math.” When I was told that I stormed out of the room and actually went home and cried. Everything that I had worked for years, all went down the drain.
It turned out that later Greg Moo packed up all his things one Friday night and resigned as principal. He left a short note in everyone’s mailbox. When we returned on Monday, he was gone. He didn’t even finish out his first year as principal. No one shed a tear. We did get our staffing back after he left, so the math department went untouched.
Greg Moo went on to Helena, MT and became principal of a high school there the following year. I wrote a letter to the Math Department of that high school warning them of what might happen. Well, he tried to do the same thing up there and fortunately was met with resistance. By Christmas, he was gone. Again, he didn’t finish out the school year.
In 30 years of teaching I have never encountered such an evil man when it comes to education. When a so-called educator says “to counsel kids NOT to take math”, it’s totally unbelievable. Could he also say “to council kids NOT to take English, or Science, or Foreign Languages”? I’m guessing, given the chance, he would.
Oh, his book…..No I didn’t read it. I’m now counseling people “NOT” to buy the book.
