JAMES R. OSGOOD & CO.'S

New

Publications.

Theodore Winthrop's Works. New Popular Edition. Elegantly bound in handsomely stamped cloth. Cecil Dreeme. John Brent. Edwin Brothertoft. Canoe and the Saddle. Life in the Open Air. Each complete in 1 vol. 16mo. Price, $1.00 a volume.

Messrs. James R. Osgood & Co. have just published a popular edition of these novels by Theodore Winthrop. This edition, in type and page, is, we believe, similar to the former editions, but the volumes are bound in very handsome green cloth covers, stamped with beautiful ornamental work on back and sides. It is pleasant to note the evidence which the publication of this new edition affords, that the works of the gifted young hero whose life went out at Big Bethel, and whose success in Literature only began after he had ceased to aspire for earthly fame, still find favor and appreciation with the public, and hold an honorable place, despite the hosts of new candidates claiming attention. The price of these volumes is $1 each."-Boston Daily Advertiser.

Nonsense Songs, Stories, Botany, and Alphabets. By EDWARD LEAR. With one hundred and fifty original grotesque illustrations by the author. I vol., square 12mo. $2.00.

This little volume embalms a little of that funny nonsense which all of us relish at times, and that children have an especial predilection for. There a shree Nonsense Alphabets, each very amusing in its way. The Nonsense Stories include the story of the four little children who went round the world, and the history of the seven families of the Lake Pipple Popple. The songs are nine in number, and have relation to The Owl and the Pussy Cat,' 'The Duck and the Kangaroo,' 'The Daddy Long Legs and the Fly,' "The Jumblies,' The Nut-Crackers and the Sugar-tongs,' Calico Pie,' 'Mr. and Mrs. Spikky Sparrow,' 'The Broom, the Shovel, the Poker, and the Tongs,' and 'The Table and the Chair.' Nonsense is pleasant when it is first class, and when too much of it is not indulged in at once. These conditions apply to the present volume. Children will turn over its pages with pleasure, for the illustrations, besides being capitally executed, are very amusing in themselves."-New York Sunday Times.

Lucile and other Poems. By OWEN MEREDITH. With Portrait and sixteen Illustrations by Du MAURIER. I vol. 8vo. Paper, 50 cents.

James R. Osgood & Co. have published an octavo paper edition of Owen Meredith's Lucile,' with a number of his best and latest shorter poems, including 'Fair Poland with the Yellow Hair,' Good Night in the Porch,' 'Terra Incognito,' 'Adieu Mignonne, ma Belle,' 'Midges,' 'At Home during the Ball,' 'The Last Time I met Lady Ruth,' and others as popular. The book contains a steel portrait of the poet and 'Lucile,' embellished by the illustrations of George du Maurier."-New York Evening Post.

Nathaniel Hawthorne's Works. Illustrated

Library Edition. Vol. 1. The Marble Faun. Vol. II. Twice-Told Tales. Vol. III. Mosses from an Old Manse. Vol. IV. The Scarlet Letter and The Blithedale Romance. Each complete in 1 vol. 12mo. $2.00 per volume. These volumes form the first four issues of the new illustrated edition of Nathaniel Hawthorne's works, designed both as an elegant and popular edition. Hawthorne is, perhaps, less widely known to the rising generation of readers than his English contemporaries; but if there be those who have not as yet garnered the rich fruits of his ripe study, subtlety of thought, deep and varied powers of imagination, and clearness and simplicity of diction, there is a rare and refining feast before them in the books of the great American author, now offered in this most attractive form.

Ten Great Religions. By Rev. JAMES FREEMAN CLARKE, I vol. 12mo. $3.00.

The object of this work, which is from the pen of the Rev.

James Freeman Clarke, and has recently been published by Messrs. James R. Osgood & Co., is to set forth the cardinal points of doctrine and differing characteristics of the leading Few. religious systems that have flourished in the world. even among readers of liberal culture, have more than a vague idea of these commanding creeds, and to obtain a competent knowledge of them for the comprehension of history has demanded hitherto a degree and variety of research that could be undertaken only by the professional student or the man of abundant leisure. Mr. Clarke has supplied in 'Ten Great Religions; the means of at least an intelligent if not exhaustive acquaintance with the subject. The work is marked throughout by a fervent and catholic spirit and a deep reverence for the truth, and it has been conscientiously prepared from original authorities, and not from the commonly accepted opinions of the body of hasty and superficial writers.-New York Evening Post.

We are glad to note the appearance, from the press of James R. Osgood & Co., of an American edition of Thomas Hughes' latest work, Alfred the Great.' We gave a review of this work at some length on its appearance in England, in the Sunday Library,' but we desire to repeat in brief our thorough eulogy of it as one of the finest brief Biographies in English Literature. Not only is Mr. Hughes' portrayal of the great Saxon king exceptionally good, but as a study of the germinating period of the life of the mother. country it is worth the attention of the thorough scholar, while its beautifully simple style and hearty tone commend it to any reader who can appreciate good writing.-New York Evening Mail.

Condensed Novels by Bret Harte, with illustrations by Sol Eytinge, Jr., and bearing the imprint of James R. Osgood & Co., is one of the wittiest and sharpest books of the season. The volume is a collection of the burlesque novels of Bret Harte. They take a wide range from Charles Dickens to Captain Marryat, and include Lothair by Mr. Benjamins,' and brief romances from the hands of Charies Reade, Cooper, Charles Lever, Miss Braddon, Alexander Dumas, Bulwer, Charlotte Bronté, T. S. Arthur, Wilkie Collins, Victor Hugo, Michelet, and Belle Boyd. Every page shows the genius of exaggerated mimicry. The sharp discernment, ingenuity, and nonchalant grace which the caricaturist exhibits in hitting off the foibles and countless mannerisms of his victims, is enough to excite the admiration of their most enthusiastic friends. No critic, by vast circumlocution of rhetoric and the most delicate word-poising, could more accurately indicate at once the sources of power and the points of weakness of the world's most popu lar writers. It is a striking example of the American style of criticism by hyperbole.-Chicago Post,

This bulky volume of over five hundred pages is the product of a minute, patient, and affectionate study of the life and works of Sir Walter Scott, supplemented by extended travel among the places with which they are associated. All the circumstances connected with the novels and poems of the great Scottish romancer, their scenery, characters, and action, together with the age and condition of the writer at the time of their production, are here detailed with particularity and fidelity. The book unites a quite comprehensive history of the scenery, antiquities, and romance of Scotland. with a tolerably complete biography of Sir Walter. But the description of objects and places is not limited to Scotland alone, for the panorama presented in Scott's works includes scenes in England, Wales, France, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, and even in the far East. These have all been sought out and carefully portrayed, adding completeness and interest to the volume."-Chicago Post.
