This Author, who has lately reached an enviable reputation in France, has begun to attract the attention of the leading American critics.

The following extracts are from an article which appeared in " The Nationof February 23, 1871

"They are written with just that art which redeems the most ordinary incidents from appearing commonplace.

His longer novels are masterpieces of fiction. “Autour d'une Source' (Around a Spring) is simple and pathetic. The hero is the priest of a little Fillage; the other characters, a spendthrift count, who is a man of pleasure of the Second Empire; his rich wife; her father, who is a speculator; and a few others. We shall not gire an analysis of the novel which it is so easy to get, but shall content ourselves with praising its great merits. Regarded merely as a bit of workmanship, it has all the elegance which, perhaps, will immortalize the best of the present race of French writers.”

The Galaxy,speaking of Autour d'une Source(Around a Spring), says:

"With a wonderfully small amount of material the author has made a most graceful
story, interesting from the beginning to the end. Portraiture of character, description of
persons, dissection of motive, pictures of life in city and among the mountains, conversation,
dialogue, development of plot, are all excellent.”
