cordance with this stipulation the entire property in his works, copyright, stock, &c., has just been disposed of. Messrs. Chapman & Hall, his original publishers, who have always had a share in the works, are now the sole possessors of them, through a transaction among the largest known to the Trade, and as long as the copyrights last they have the exclusive ownership of the long series of books from the Pickwick Papers downward. There is, probably, no literary property in England of equal money value at the present | time, and from the well-known enterprise of these publishers, we may be sure that neither pains nor cost will be spared in the dissemination of Dickens' Works, in forms adapted for every class of readers.

The books of the current month have been miscellaneous rather than important, novelties being reserved for the London season dating from after the meeting of Parliament.

the Church and Society, addressed to the Church he has long presided over; a review, in fact, of the guiding motives and impulses of his ministerial career, and Misread Passages of Scripture, second series, in continuation of a highly popular volume of the same description published about two years since.

A History of Rome, by William Ihne, volumes I. and II., is the work of a German scholar, dated from Heidelburgh, though written in English. The original work, in the author's vernacular tongue, has a great continental reputation among scholars, and it is a remarkable proof of the thoroughness of linguistic studies among the Germans, that the same person can rewrite it in excellent and flowing English. The history is intended to occupy the place that Dr. Arnold's Roman History would have filled had he lived to complete his work, with all the additional light derived from the researches of the last twenty-five years. Dr. Arnold, indeed, wrote too much under the influence of Niebuhr (whose sway in classical anti

tory at the present day, when, though the general impulse given by him yet remains, his unsound

The History of Dr. Ihne is of a similar class to Prof. Curtius' Greece, or Sir Edward Creasy's England, more adapted to the general reader than Mommsen, and giving the results of scholarship and historical criticism, rather than the processes made use of in attaining them. The two volumes now issued come down to the end of the second Punic War; two more are expected to complete the work presumably with the end of the Republic.

In Theology, The Speaker's Commentary is still expected, and a slight change has been made in the form of the publication of the first portion.quity was then undisputed), to be quite satisfacIt is considered desirable to comprise the Pentateuch entire in the first issue; but to do this would make a single volume of rather too ponder-ness in particulars is generally understood. ous dimensions, so it will be divided into two parts, both issued simultaneously, however, and in effect forming one volume. A work of interest to American Churchmen is the beautiful facsimile edition of the long lost Black Letter Prayer Book, containing the MS. alterations and additions made and adopted in the year 1661, and constituting the parent text of the English Church Prayer Book (and in great measure of the American one also) of the present day. The volume has been produced by the Government authority in connection with the Royal Commission on Ritual, and a small number of copies have been set apart for sale. Other books of this class, worthy of notice are, Rev. B. W. Savile's learned and comprehensive book, The Truth of the Bible, evidence from the Record of Creation, the Origin and Antiquity of Man, and the Archæology of Nations; The History and Literature of the Hebrews, according to the Old Testament and the Apocrypha, by C. and A. de Rothschild, interesting as well from its merits as being the production of two members of the great Jewish family of that name; The Problem of Evil, by Prof. Naville of Geneva, translated by Rev. E. W. Shalders; and two works by the most eloquent and gifted Independent or Dissenting Clergyman of the day, Rev. J. Baldwin Brown; First Principles of Ecclesiastical Truth, Essays in

The Ancient Geography of India, comprising the Campaigns of Alexander and the Buddhist Period, by Capt. Alexander Cunningham, is a work of exhaustive labor and learning, such as is rarely met with now. In London, its Celebrities, Characters, and Remarkable Places, the author, J. Heneage Jesse, the well-known writer of Memoirs of the Stuarts, &c., furnishes an eloquent and interesting digest of the scattered waifs and strays of History, Biography, and Tradition, that consecrate, in the eyes of the literary pilgrim, the (too often) dingy and darksome localities of the great metropolis. Annals of Oxford, by J. Cady Jeaffreson, treats a capital subject in a lively and entertaining rather than in a profound manner.

Among scientific books, the chief place must be awarded to Mr. Proctor's work, The Sun, now just issued. The attention of astronomers has

been mainly directed for some years past to this vast self-luminous body, and the wonderful result attained by spectrum analysis, and the progress made in discovering its true nature by means of photography, etc., are so remarkable, that a manual of the subject was a great desideratum. It is now supplied by one who is himself a discoverer, as well as a recorder of others' researches, Mr. Proctor, ranking high among the astronomical observers of the scientific world, The number and beauty of the illustrations make his elegant volume really worthy of its theme. The practical use made by French ingenuity of the science of aerostatics imparts great present interest to the handsomely illustrated Travels in the Air, or Popular Account of Balloon Voyages and Ventures, brought down to the latest Parisian exploits in aerial navigation by Mr. Glaisher. When a man like Sir Charles Lyell writes a book for popular instruction, he may be said to confer a favor on the race. His Students' Elements of Geology, just issued, aims (in his own words) "to reconcile brevity with copiousness of illustrations, so as to place his work within the reach of many to whom it would be otherwise inaccessible," a new Dictionary of Sciences, comprising Astronomy, Chemistry, Electricity, Magnetism, Pneumatics, etc., with an essay on the History of the Physical Sciences, by G. F. Rodwell, is highly spoken of, and forms a companion to the Haydn Dictionary of Chronology and Biography. Dr. Beale's new work, Disease Germs, their real nature, is the result of recent and original investigations in pursuance of the subject of a former book by the same author.

A noble present for the poetical antiquary and historian is offered in the spendid new edition of The Poems of Ossian, the original Gaelic, with Macpherson's English text, a new literal translation and dissertation on their authenticity, etc., by Rev. A. Clerk. The work forms two beautifully printed volumes in imperial 8vo., and is due to the munificence of the Marquis of Bute, who, it is pleasant to see, does not allow the devotion of a convertite to the Catholic Church to monopolize all his attention. There is, indeed, a propriety about the undertaking, as Macpherson was protégé of the Earl of Bute, the Marquis's ancestor, and the unpopular minister of George III. Like the question of the authorship of Junius or authenticity of Rowley's Poems, the true source of Ossian as a subject for literary debate will never lose its attraction, and here all the extant materials are brought together in one focus. Though of late years the existence of old poetry of high merit among the Highlanders previous to

Macpherson has been certainly proved, still it differs from Ossian, and where his discoverer got his Gaelic text is a question that even the present learned editor can throw no light on. Mr. Clerk's translation shows, however, that Macpherson imperfectly understood it, and often misrepresents in the versions that have "gone around the world." It would seem as if some other person yet undiscovered must have been at work in secret, content to lose his individuality in the aim of glorifying his country. Mr. Swinburne's occasional deviations from propriety seem to be condoned by his poetical genius. His new volume, Songs before Sunrise, has met with remarkable success, and stamps him, with all his eccentricities, a partaker in the vision and the faculty divine. A translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses in English blank verse is the production of a ripe scholar, Mr. Henry King, whose writings have been hitherto anonymous. The new volume of the same publishers, Ancient Classics for English Readers, contains Eschylus, by Reginald Copleston; the series will be henceforward continued quarterly. The small stock of English musical literature is increased by an elegant little monograph on Beethoven and his Works, by E. Graeme and Dr. Hiller. Leslie's Handbook for Young Painters must not be overlooked in the country of this accomplished artist and author.
