At Harrafdyke, at the advanced age of 95, James Ladly, who, for many years, was in the habit of walking the ftreets of Whitehaven, with a wooden leg, and leading an afs, with befoms for fale. By this occupation, and fome fmall relief from the parish of Haltwhittle, in Northumberland, (the place of his nativity) he was enabled to fupport himself decently, till within a few weeks of his deceafe.

His faculties were unimpaired to the day of his death.

LANCASHIRE.

The Harriet, of Liverpool, belonging to T. Barton, efq. has made no less than 33 voyages from that port to Barbadoes, and back, during the last 10 years and three months; an inftance of commercial expedition fcarcely to be paralelled. In the courfe of her fuc ceffive voyages, fhe has taken and retaken a confiderable number of vessels from the enemy, and refcued feveral others from falling into the hands of the French.

The officers of the Rochdale Volunteer Corps have agreed to give a premium of 10 guineas to every volunteer who fhall have, in lawful wedlock, twin male children born alive, and that fuch of the officers as the parents fhall approve of, fhall ftand godfather on the occafion. Thefe gentlemen had lately an opportunity of appropriating this humane and judicious donation, the wite of one Ashworth, a private in Capt. Hamer's company, having been fafely delivered of two fine boys.

YORKSHIRS.

The Twelve Church Burgeffes, at Sheffield, have fubfcribed 50 guineas annually to the New General Infirmary at that place.

The Corporation of Hull have very patriotically refolved to fubfcribe 500l. towards the exigences of the State, in this alarming crifis. For this purpofe, the falary of the Mayor is to be difcontinued; and an addrefs has been agreed to, recommending his Worship to give no more public dinners, on any account whatever.

Beilby Thompson, efq. befides a donation of two fat heifers and a quantity of wheat to the poor of Efcricke and Whildrake, has tranf mitted the fum of icol. to the Lord Mayor of York, to be diftributed among the neceffitous poor of that city. To render this liberal benefaction as diffufive as poffible, the parish officers have been requested to furnish lifts of proper objects in their respective districts, among whom it will be diftributed in small fums. LINCOLNSHIRE.

The Bishop of Lincoln's exertions to establish a fund for the relief of the widows and orphans of clergymen belonging to the county of Lincoln, have been crowned with great fuccefs. From the printed lift of benefactors and fubfcribers, it appears, that the benefactions already received amount to 5191. 11s. and the annual fubfcription to 6031. 158. Both thefe fums, it is confidently hoped, will be confiderably increafed, before the first annual meeting, next Midfummer.

Member of the Royal Medical Society, Edinburgh, and of the Medical Society in London, Author of Medical Surgery, and many other valuable publications. By his death, the community has loft a zealous enquirer after fcience, and a most fuccessful practitioner, whofe ardour in his purfuits for the improvement of his profeffion, did not abate but with his death. It is hoped, that a third volume of his work, "An Enquiry into the prefent State of Medical Surgery," which he had nearly finished before his laft illness, will be given to the world, by fome of his profeffional friends.

ESSEX.

The fouth-west corner of that venerable pile of antiquity, Great Waltham Church, has given way, and a confiderable part of the fabric has, of confequence, fallen down. The caufe of this fudden ruin is attributed to the weight of the bells, as it was firft obferved during the ringing a peal. If fupporters had not been placed fome time fince, it is fuppofed the whole fteeple would have participated in the fall.

The following memorial of the glorious naval action of the 14th of February, 1797, has been lately erected in the Council Chamber of the County Hall, at Norwich. An anchor, from the ring of which is fufpended a yard and fail, fuppofed to be torn in action, on which is infcribed :-" The fword of the Spa"nish Admiral Don Xavier Winthuyfen, who "died of the wounds he received in an en

B. had ample scope for "difplay.
