"tuled, "An Act for making more effectual provifion for the government of the Province "of Quebec in North America," and to make further provifion for the government of "the faid Province ;" and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the Tame, that it shall and may be lawful to and for the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, or person adminiftering the government of this Province for the time being, out of any unappropriated monies which now are, or fhall be hereafter in the hands of the ReceiverGeneral of this Province, to advance annually, during the continuance of this Act, to the Committees which may have been, or fhall be appointed under and by virtue of the aforefaid A&t of the fifty-feventh year of His Majefty's Reign, to fuperintend the Houses of Correction in the feveral Diftris refpectively, that is to fay, a fum £00 granted not exceeding two hundred pounds, current money of this Province, for the District Quebec, £200 for Of Quebec; a fum not exceeding two hundred pounds, current money of this 100 for Three- Province, for the District of Montreal, and a fum not exceeding one hundred pounds like e currency for the District of Three-Rivers, for the purpole of enabling the faid Committees, or either of them in their respective Districts, to hire, or otherwife provide a building fit and proper to ferve for a temporary Houfe of Correction; and alfo fuch accommodation for the performance of labour as may be requifite; and alfo to provide a ftock of materials for the employment of the persons who now are, or fhall hereafter be confined in the faid Houfes of Correction, in the aforefaid Dil tricts refpe&tively, as well as for the purpose of allowing reasonable falaries to the Superintendant and Keepers thereof, in each of the faid Districts respectively.

II. And whereas it has been afcertained, that in confequence of the increased po but not to exceed pulation of the District of Montreal, and the great number of prifoners which it has frequently been found nec ffary to commit to the House of Correction for the faid Diftrict, the aforefaid fum of two hundred pounds per anuum, is infufficient for the fupport and maintenance of the faid Houfe of Correction; be it therefore enacted by the authority aforefaid, that from and after the paffing of this Act, it fhall and may be lawful to and for the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, or the perfon adminiftering the government of this Province for the time being, to advance out of any of the before-mentioned funds, fuch further fum for the purpofes aforefaid, as on a reprefentation from the Committees for fuperintending the faid Houfe of Correction may be found neceffary, and fhall be approved of by the Governor, Lieutenant Gover nor, or person adminiftering the government of this Province for the time being.Provided always, that the fum hereby authorized to be fo advanced for the purposes aforefaid, over and above the aforefaid annual fum of two hundred pounds, fhall not in any one year exceed the fum of one hundred pounds, current money of this Province.

III. And be it further enacted by the authority aforefaid, that the due applicauon of the faid monies, agreeably to the directions of this Act, fhall be accounted

An ACT to establish a House of Industry in the City of Montreal.

WHEREAS the late John Conrad Marsteller, who died on the feventeenth day of May, in the year of our Lord one thoufand eight hundred and eight, did devife and bequeath by his laft Will and Teftament, certain real or immoveable eftates, and the r ft, refidue and remainder of all and every his eftates, property and effects, after payment of his debts and legacies, for the purpose of establishing in the City of Montreal, a Houfe of Induftry, which faid real eftates confift of two lots of ground, with two fione houfes and other buildings thereon erected, fituate in the main ftreet of St. Mary's fuburbs, in the Parish of Montreal, in the District of Montreal; and whereas he cftablishment of fuch Houfe of Induftry cannot be effected without the aid and affiftance of the Legislature, Be i: therefore enacted by the King's moft excellent Majefty, by and with the advice and content of the Legislative Council and Aff mbly of the Province of Lower-Canada, conftituted and affembled by virtue .of and under the authority of an Act paffed in the Parliament of Great Britai, inti tuled, "An Act to repeal certain parts of an Act paffed in th fourteenth year of His "Majefy's reign, intituled. "An Act for making more effectual provifion for the government of the Province of Quebec in North America," and to mak: further provifion "for the government of the faid Province;" and it is hereby enacted by the autho created by this rity of the fame, that from and after the palling of this Act a Corporation and Body of the Wardens Politic and Corporate, for carrying into full effect the laid will of the faid John Industry of the Conrad Marfteller, and for executing the feveral powers vefted in them by this Act, city of Montreal. fhall be eftablished by the name of the Wardens of the Houfe of Induty, in the City of Montreal; and by that name fhall have perpetual fucceffion and a common petualsuccession, feal, and fhall and may fue or be fued, in all Courts and places within this Province, and shall and may do all matters and things whatsoever, in as full and ample manner and form, to all intents and purposes, as any Body Politic or Bodies Corporate can or may as fuch lawfully do; and in every fuit to be commenced against the faid Wardens

U que feu John Conrad Marsteller, décédé le dix-feptième jour de Mai, dans l'an de Notre Seigneur Mil huit cent huit, auroit donné et légué par fes dernières volontés et teftament, certaines propriétés réelles et le refte et le réfidu de tous et chacun de fes biens, propriétés et effets, fes dettes et autres legs étant préalablement payés, aux fins d'établir dans la Ville de Montréal une Maison d'Industrie, lefquelles propriétés réelles confiftent en deux lopins de terre avec deux maifons en pierre et autres bâtimens deffus conftruits, fitués dans la grande rue du Fauxbourg Sainte Marie, dans la Paroiffe de Montréal, dans le Diftra de Montréal; Et vu que l'établiffement de la dite Maifon d'Induftrie ne peut être effectuée fans l'aide et l'affiftance de la Légiflature: Qu'il foit donc ftatué par la Très Excellente Majefté du Roi, par et de l'avis et confentement du Confeil Légiflatif et de l'Affemblée de la Province du Bas-Canada, constitués et affemblés en vertu et fous l'autorité d'un Acte paffé dans le Parlement de la Grande-Bretagne, intitulé," A&te qui rappelle certaines parties d'un Acte paffé dans la quatorzième "Année du Règne de Sa Majesté, intitulé, "Alle qui pourvoit plus efficacement pour le Gouvernement de la Province de Québec dans l'Amérique Septentrionale;" "Et qui pourvoit plus amplement pour le Gouvernement de la dite Province;" Et il eft par le préfent ftatué par la dite autorité, que depuis et après la paffation de cet Acte, une Corporation et Corps Politique et Incorporé, pour mettre à effet le dit Teftament du dit John Conrad Marteller, et pour exécuter les différens pouvoirs dont ils font revêtus par le préfent Acte, fera établie fous le nom de Gardiens de la Maifon d'Induftrie, dans la Cité de Montréal, et fous ce nom auront fucceffion perpétuelle et un içeau commun, poursuivront et pourront être pour fuivis dans toutes les Cours et places de cette Province, et pourront faire aucune matière et chose quelconques d'une manière et forme auffi amples, et à toutes fins et intentions qu'aucun Corps Politique ou Corps Incorporé peut légalement faire,

Mat fteller, left by him for the fame ufes and purposes, and all and every the fum and fums of money, notes, bills, bonds, obligations and other fecurities whatsoever, due, owing, or in any wife belonging to the eftate and fucceffion of the fid John Conrad Marfteller, and all the r ft, refidue and remainder thereof, his juft debts and leg. cies first paid and, if neceffary, may fue to recover and receive the fame, or any part or parcel thereof, of and from all and every perfon and perfons whom the lame fhall or may concern, and on receiving and taking the real and perfonal eftates, or any part or parcel thereof, the faid Wardens fhall and may make and give receipts, acquittances, releases and discharges for the fame to all and every person and perfons whom the fame fhall or may concern; which faid receipts, acquittacces, releafes and difcharges fhall be good and effectual in law, to all intents and purpofes, against all perfons whomsoever; and the faid Corporation, from and after the paffing of this Act, fhall be composed of eight perfons as Wardens thereof, having a freehold in and refiding in the faid city of Montreal, who shall be named and appointed by the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, or perfon adminiftering the government of thi Province for the time being, and their several and refpective fucceffors who fhall be nominated and appointed in the manner herein-after provided and directed.

And be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid, that the faid eight perfons to Continuance of be appointed as aforefaid, fhall continue in the faid office of Wardens of the faid Houfe of Induftry: from and after the paffing of this A&t, for and during the term of four and of two years; that is to fay, at the expiration of two years, four of the faid Wardens fhall go out of office by lot, to be determined in manner following, that is to lay, at a meeting to be called for the purpose, by the Profident to be chofen as herein after directed, and which meeting fhall be held within three months, and not lefs than one month before the expiration of the faid two years, lots fhall be drawn to afcertain the four Wardens who are to retire and go out of office, and be replaced by four other perfons to be nominated by the Grand Joy of the District of Mon treal, which fhail be returned at the Court of Quarter Seffion next eniving fach meeting, who shall-each of them poffels a trechoid in, and be a refident within the
