fons fo appointed Cullers and Meafurers of fquare Oak, Elm, and Pine Timber, and Mafts and Spars, fhall provide himfe'f with a proper ftamp, wherewith to ftamp or indent on the butt end of each piece of Oak, Elm, or Pine Timber, in fpected by him, and found merchantable, the letter M, with the initials of his name, in legible characters, to denote that the fame has been infpected and found merchantable; and that fuch perfons, fo appointed Culler and Mafurer, fball he bound to provide himself with a proper ftamp wherewith to ftamp or in. dent, on the end of each piece of Oak Timber, of a smaller fize than ten inch's fquare at the smaller end, and on fquare white or yellow pine timber under twelve inches fquare, and on red pine timber under ten inches fquare, and on fquare elm timber ander twelve inches square, at the smaller ends, and of found and good quality, the letter U with the initials of his name, in legible characters, to indic-te that the fame has been inspected and found under fize; and that each of the perfons fo appointed Cullers and Meafarers of itaves, fhall in like manner provide him If with a pro per ftamp, wherewith to ftamp or indent on the end of each stave and piece of heading of one inch or upwards, infpected by him and found merchantable, the letter M, with the initials of his name, to denote that the fame has been infpected and found merchantable; and that each of the perfons fo appointed Curlers and Measurers of Oak and Pine plank and boards, fhall in like manner, provide himfelf with a proper ftamp where with to ftamp or indent on the end of each plank, or board, inspected by him and found merchantable, the letter M, with the initials of his name, to denote that the fame has been inspected and found merchantable; and each of the Cullers and Measurers of Oak and Pine Timber, fhall also provide himle f with a proper stamp, wherewith to stamp or indent, on each and every piece of Oak and Pine Timber, Mafts. and Spars, inspected by him and rejected, the letter R, with the intials of his name, in legible characters, to denote that the same has been infpected and rejected, as unmerchantable.

XIII. It is hereby provided and enacted, that any person or perfons who fhall surers, branding prevent or in any wife moleft any Culler or Measurer as aforelaid, from marking or branding any or fach of the above enumerated articles as he may have been called and required to call or measure as aforelaid, or any Culter or Meafarer who shall neglec to mark or brand the fame, fhall upon being thereof lawfully convicted, incur a forPenalty on Cul feature and penalty not exceeding on hundred pounds, nor less than five pounds,carrency, and in default of payment of fuch forfeiture and penalty as aforelaid, fuch perlon lo offending and convicted, shall be imprisoned for a space of time not exceeding three months, nor lels than one month from the date of fuch conviction.

Et qu'il foit de plus ftatué par l'autorité fufdite, que chacune des perfonnes &c. se pourvoiainfi nommées Infpecteurs et Mefureurs de bois de chêne, d'orme, et de pin équar ris, et de mats et efparres, fe pourvoira d'une étampe convenable, avec laquelle il: puiffe étamper ou empreindre, fur le bout de chaque pièce de bois de chêne, d'orme ou de pin qui aura été, par lui examinée et trouvée marchande, la lettre M. avec les lettres initiales de fon nom, en caractères lifibles pour marquer qu'elle a été· examinée et trouvée marchande; Et que telle perfonne ainɓ nommée Inspecteur et Mefureur, fera obligée de fe pouvoir d'une étampe convenable avec laquelle il puiffe étamper ou empreindre fur le bout de chaque pièce de chêne d'une dimenfion au deffous de dix pouces d'équarriffage au plus petit bout, et fur du pin blanc o jaune équarti au deffous de douze pouces d'équarriffage, et fur da pin rouge équarri au deffous de dix pouces d'équarriffage, et fur de l'orme équarri au deffous de douze pouces d'équarriffage aux plus petits bouts et de qualité bonne et saine, la lettre. U avec les lettres initiales de fon nom, en caractères lifibles, pour faire connoître que la dite pièce a été infprêtée et n'a pas été trouvée de dimenfions, et que chacune des personnes ainfi nommées Infpe&eurs et Mefureurs des douves, fe pourvoira de la même manière d'une étampe convenable, avec laquelle il puiffe étamper et sem-preindre fur le bout de chaque douve, et morceau de fonds d'un pouce d'épaiffeur ou plus, qui aura été par lui infpecté et trouvé marchand, la lettre M. avec les lettres initiales de fon nom, pour marquer qu'ils ont été examinés et trouvés marchands, Et que chacune des perfonnes ainfi nommées Inspecteur et Mefureur de planches et madriers de chêne et de pin, se pourvoira, de la même manière, d'une étampe conve nable avec laquelle il pu ffe étamper ou empreindre, fur le bout de chaque planche ou madrier qui aura été, par lui examiné et trouvé marchand, la lettre M. avec les lettres initiales de fon nom, pour marquer qu'ils ont été examinés et trouvés marchands; Et chacun des Infpe&teurs et Mefureurs de bois de chêne et de pin, se pourvoira auffi d'une étampe convenable, avec laquelle il puiffe étamper ou empreindre fur chaque et toute pièce de bois de chêne et de pin, mats et elparres, qui aura été par lui examinée et rejettée, la lettre R. avec les lettres initiales de fon-nom, en caractères lifibles, pour marquer qu'elle a été examinée, et rejetée comme non marchande..

XIII. Et il eft par le préfent pourvu et katué qu'une perfonne ou personnes qui empêcheront, ou qui en aucune manière molefteront aucun Inspecteur ou Melareur

XIV. And be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid, that any person or perfons who fhall knowingly, wilfully and fraudulently, deface, obliterate or remove any of the aforefaid marks or letters which may have been marked, burned or im. printed, in or upon any of the above enumerated articles of lumber after the fame fhall have been as aforefaid culled and meafured, every fuch perfon or perfons fo offending, fhall, upon being thereof lawfully convicted, incur a forfeiture or penalty of a fum not exceeding one hundred pounds, nor less than five pounds, cor. rent money of this Province; and in default of payment of fuch forfeitures or pen alty as aforefaid, fuch perfon or perfons fo offending and convicted, fhall be imprifoned for a pace of time not exceeding three months, nor less than one month from the date of fuch conviction.

And be it further enacted by the authority aforefaid, that if any perfon or perfons fhall unlawfully ufe or fhall counterfeit or forge, or procure to be counterfeited or forged, any ftamp directed to be provided for ufe in purfuance of this Act, or fhall counterfeit or imitate the impreffion of the fame on any piece of Oak or Pine Timber, mafts or fpars, or on any flaves, or on any plank and boards, with an intent to defraud, he, fhe or they, being thereof legally convicted, ball forfeit and pay a fum not exceeding one hundred pounds, current money of this Province, nor lefs than fifty pounds, like money, for every fuch offence, and in default of payment thereof, fhall be imprisoned for a period not less than three months, nor exceeding twelve months.

aforefaid, fuch Juftice fhall, and he is hereby required immediately to grant a Warrant, authorifing fuch Culler or Meafurer, or other perfon, to take a Conftable or other peace officer, and feize and detain all fuch lumber fo fhipped or about to be shipped, contrary to the true intent and meaning of this Act, and the perfon or persons having fhipped, or being about to fhip fuch lumber for exportation, knowing that the fame had not been previoufly culled and measured, upon due proof and conviction thereof, fhall forfeit and pay a fum not exceeding two hundred pounds, nor less than one hundred pounds, current money of this Province, and in default of payment shall be imprisoned for a period not icfs than three months, nor exceeding twelve months.

Et qu'il foit de plus ftatué par l'autorité fofdite, qu'aucune perfonne ou perlonnes qui fciemment, malicieufement et frauduleusement, effaceront, détruiront on enlèveront aucunes des fufdites marques ou lettres qui auront pu être marquées, brulées ou empreintes fur aucun des articles ci-deffus énumérés de Bois après qu'ils auront été infpe&tés et mefurés, comme fufdit, chaque telle perfonne ou perfonnes ainfi contrevenantes, en étant dûment convaincues encourront une amende ou pénalité d'une fomme n'excédant pas cent livres, et pas moins de cinq livres argent courant de cette Province, et telle perfonne ou perfonnes ainfi contrevenantes et convaincues qui ne payeront pas telle amende ou pénalité, feront emprisonnées pendant un tems n'excédant pas trois mois, ni moins d'un mois, à compter du jour de telle conviction.

XVII. And be it further enacted by the authority aforefaid, that in case any Culler and Measurer fhall at any time be found guilty of wilful neglect of duty, or of partiality, in the execution of his office, or of wilfully giving a falfe account or certificate of the article or articles fubmitted to his infpection as aforefaid, or of knowingly ftamping or shipping, or caufing to be ftamped or fhipped, or omiting to ftamp and mark any article of Lumber culled or measured by him, whether the fame be merchantable, under fize, or unmerchantable in the manner required by Law for exportation, or otherwise contrary to this Act, he shall for every such offence, forfeit and pay the fum of one hundred pounds, current money of this Province, and be difmiffed from his office, and for ever afterwards be incapable of holding or enjoying any fuch office, fituation or employment.

XVIII. And be it further enacted by the authority aforefaid, that if any Master or Owner of any fhip or veffel, bound from any place or Port in this Province to foreign Ports, fhall be found guilty of wilful neglect of duty, in receiving on board of his fhip or veffel any article of Lumber without being regularly ftamped as provided for by this A&t, (except for the actual ufe of his fhip) he fhall for every fuch offence forfeit a fum not exceeding fifty pounds nor less than five pounds, current money of this Province.

XIX. And be it further enacted by the authority aforefaid, that the fecond, twelfth, fifteenth, feventeenth and eighteenth fections of this Act shall be inferted under the direction of the Mafter of the Trinity Houfe, by the Captain of the Port of Quebec, in the Book of Regulations for the Ports of Quebec and Montreal, and be by the faid Captain of the Port of Quebec, delivered to Mafters of ships on their arrival at the Port of Quebec.

XX. And whereas from tempeftuous weather and other caufes, divers quantidrift. ties of Timber, mafts, fpars, ftaves, oars, handspikes, plank or boards, boats, ba teaux and fcows, frequently get loofe and go adrift in the river Saint Lawrence, the river Ottawa, or the rivers that fall into them, and are taken poffeffion of by evil difpofed perfons, who fecretly appropriate fuch Timber, mafts, ipars, flaves, oars, handspikes, plank and boards, boats, bateaux and fcows, to their own ufe, to the great damage of the owner or owners thereof: Be it therefore enacted by the authority aforesaid, that if any perfon, or persons, not employed by the owner or owners, or other perfons lawfully authorifed in the falvage of any Timber, mafts, fpars, ftaves, oars, handspikes, plank or boards, boats, bateaux and fcows, which
