Entered as second-class matter July 28, 1909, at the post-office at Richmond, Va., under the Act of July 16, 1894. SAMUEL PEACHY LATANE. Health work in Virginia never suffered a more severe blow than that which fell Sunday, May 1, when Dr. S. P. Latane, secretary of the State Board and member from the Seventh Congressional District, was killed in an automobile accident near Winchester. Dr. Latane was the type of man to whom public service, in a good cause, was a pleasure, and he gave to the discharge of his important duties the enthusiasm of the reformer with the wisdom of the man of science. As a member of the Board's Tuberculosis Committee, and as a warm friend of the Department, Dr. Latane played a large part in the establishment of the Catawba Sanatorium and in outlining the plans for the educational work of this department. As a physician and investigator, Dr. Latane ranked with the foremost of Virginia. Able, well equipped and sympathetic, he was very successful in his practice and was universally beloved in the Valley. On the day of his funeral, Wednesday, May 4, the whole. town of Winchester united to do him honor. Work was suspended; the stores were closed; the bells tolled; all felt that a just man and a good man had gone to his reward; and all mourned his passing. Personally Dr. Latane was a man of unusual charms. He was magnetic, gracious, cultured and inspiring, and never failed to win friends, wherever he went. He was a friend where he was a physician, and he was a beloved comrade where he was a trained man of science. The State Board of Health, at its annual meeting, will take official action on Dr. Latane's death and will put on record its appreciation of his services. In the meantime, those who knew him and loved him can but regret that one so useful and so helpful has passed beyond. |
