Health Situation in Virginia

The Catawba Sanatorium.

The Catawba Sanatorium for Incipient Tuberculosis was opened on July 15, and has already established itself. The renovation of the old Red Sulphur Springs was a task which required the utmost pains and a considerable expenditure on the part of the Health Department, but the finished work fully justifies the outlay. The arrangements at the Sanatorium are such as to offer the very best means of cure at the least expense on the part of the patient.

The female patients are living in the lean-to built on the west side of the Sanatorium lawn. This building meets all the demands of sanitary science and is admirably suited for its purpose. On either side of a central building are large covered sleeping porches, with Southern exposure, so arranged as to give the patients all the benefits of out-of-door sleeping, without unnecessary expoThe central building contains toilet-rooms, baths, etc., with a separate locker for each patient. In front of this building is the sitting-room, with windows on three sides and a maximum of fresh air. In extreme weather, patients can retire to this room during the day, and can return to their beds on the porches at night. In the cellar are the furnaces providing steam heat and an ample supply of hot water.

sure.

The arrangements for the men are somewhat different. On the east side of the lawn, above the administration building, a number of tents have been parked. Each of these tents, accommodates three men. The tents are thoroughly water-proof and are all well floored. In these the men can be comfortable at all times and

can secure the best of treatment.

Immediately adjoining the tents are the lounging quarters of the men, including toilet and bath rooms and a comfortable sitting-room for severe weather.

All patients who are able to do so eat in the general diningroom, situated in the Administration building. In this same building are the offices and quarters of the staff, the examining-rooms, the superintendent's offices and the kitchen and supply-room.

There are now twenty-seven patients at the Sanatorium, of whom twelve are male and fifteen are female. Without exception, these patients are all doing well, and give promise of speedy cure. Everyone has gained weight since admission, and all express themselves as being pleased with their surroundings.

The whole institution has the air of a resort rather than that of a hospital.

The Health Department's only regret is that the Sanatorium cannot accommodate the scores who are clamoring for admission. Many applications are being received, all requesting speedy admission to the Sanatorium. The Department has strained every nerve in equipping the Sanatorium, and has made several appropriations from the contingent account to provide necessities for the institution; but it is unable, under present appropriations, to meet the many applications.

When the Health Commissioner visited the Sanatorium on Sept. 10th, he was so impressed with the needs of the place that he authorized the erection of a second lean-to, to accommodate nine more male patients. When this building is erected, the capacity of the Sanatorium will be increased from 28 to 37, but even then the accommodations are totally insufficient. The next Assembly, it is hoped, will make appropriations to enlarge the Sanatorium. Until that time, the Health Department is forced to place further applications for admission to the Sanatorium on the waiting list.
