A SELECTION from the works of a living Divine, by any other than the author himself, is so unusual an event, that some account seems necessary of the motives which led to the undertaking of the present publication.
Having been accustomed, for some years, to read, or hear read, at family devotions, the Expository Lectures of my right Reverend Diocesan ; and being strongly impressed with the persuasion that nothing more appropriate could be used on such an occasion, I ventured to suggest to his Lordship, that a selection from the four volumes of the Gospels, adapted to the means and opportunities of numbers for whom the larger work might seem not so well adapted, would be invaluable.
