THE LILY OF THE WEST, AND OTHER POEMS.

By JOHN ALFRED Langford, LL.D. (Birmingham: Achilles Taylor. London Simpkin and Co. Price 5/-)

HIS volume is from the pen of a very old member of our Association, and a still older citizen of Birmingham, whose name and whose previous writings are well-known to all our fellowship. The title poem is a lengthy narrative, written in 138 stanzas- -a love story with a tragic ending. This is followed by a number of short poems, twenty-four sonnets, and a few lyrical translations. The verses are written with the easy flow characteristic of the author, and include one or two pieces which have appeared in our Magazine.

SONGS OF LIFE.

By EDGAR TODD.

(Midland Educational Co.)

[ocr errors]

HIS little book consists mainly of twenty-seven sonnets on the inner aspects of the devout life. There are also a few songs and other short poems. Mr. Todd is one of our own members, and has been a contributor to these pages. His present work displays much poetic insight, with considerable wealth of language and expression, and all thoughtful readers will find pleasure in its perusal.

We have also received Love: a Poem in Five Cantos, by E. DERRY. (Arliss Andrews. Price 1/-)
