Tygris. Man bemerke die sogleich folgende Namenform Tygre. 12. rewme s. p. 35 v. remes. was wont to duelle the calyffeez. Man dürfte hier die Singular form calyffee erwarten, nicht sowohl wegen des voranstehenden was, welches sich beim Plurale wiederfindet (s. p. 48 vv. there is no mo briddes), als wegen des nachherigen Ueberganges zum Singular he, obwohl auch dieser Wechsel nicht entscheidend ist. Was die Lesart betrifft, so scheint sie durch die deutsche Uebersetzung einigermassen geschützt zu werden: Da wonet der künig Caliphes AUGSB., worauf alsbald folgt: ein Caliphes IB. Uebrigens vergleiche man die oben (v. Baldak) angeführten Stellen aus MARCO POLO. Das vom Infinitiv begleitete was wont entspricht dem mhd. was gewonet, nhd. war gewohnt, pflegte, so dass wont in subjektiver Bedeutung und mit Beziehung auf Personen steht. MAUNDEVILLE gebraucht es oft von Sachen, wobei das Adjektiv objektive Bedeutung erhält: That cytee.. was wont to ben cleped Sutis, cf. p. 168 1. 3. Upward to the see.. was wont to be the grete cytee of Troye p. 15. It (sc. the ile of Rodes) was wont to be clept Collos p. 26. Before Tyre was wont to be the ston on the whiche oure Lord sat and

Est autem Baldacum amenissima ciuitas, quia per medium ejus currit magnus fluuius Tigris. Ista creditur esse Susis, ciuitas antiqua FRATR. RICOLDI Lib. Peregrin. p. 127. Im Alten Testamente übersetzt die Vulgata: In Susis castro DAN. 8, 2, NEHEM. 1, 1. Susan civitas ESTH. 1, 2 etc. Der hebräische Name ist Schuschan, gr. Tà Zovoa, lat. Susa. Der in den angeführten Bibelstellen stehende Ablativ scheint dem Worte zu Grunde zu liegen, nicht der Nominativ Susis, womit die Provinz Susiana bezeichnet wurde. Der Ort heisst gegenwärtig Sus.

p. 44. 7. at Marrok, upon the west see. Es ist die 1052 angelegte Stadt Marokko, welche im zwölften Jahrhundert 700,000 Einwohner gezählt haben soll. In Marokko herrschen übrigens noch heute die angeblichen Nachkommen der Fatime, Mohammed's Tochter. Der Name des Meeres als Westsee erscheint auch sonst: Affrica.. hap in the west side pe west occean TREVISA I. p. 157. 8. Barbaryenes, Berebers s. p. 43 v. Arabyenez. 11-12. that Babyloyne.. and at the cytee of Cayr.. ben grete huge cytees manye and fayr etc. Hier ist das Wort manye wohl nur dem gedankenlosen Schreiber angehörig: der Verfasser redet von den zwei Städten Babylon und Cairo. Die mangelhafte Wortfolge, da wir statt at the cytee nur the cytee erwarten, entsteht dadurch, dass der Verfasser durch das Adverb where veranlasst wurde mit at the cytee etc. fortzufahren: wo der Sultan wohnt und in der Stadt Cairo sc. wohnt er auch. Die Ausdrucksweise ist allerdings schlecht genug, da es heissen musste: Babylon, wo der Sultan wohnt, und Cairo sind grosse Städte und liegen nahe bei einander. 13. sytt sytteth s. p. 35 vv. wel sett etc. the ryvere Gyson, somtyme clept Nyle. Der Name Gyson ist offenbar aus Gyon verderbt. Cf. Nilus.. appellatus est alio nomine Gyon ITINER. c. IX. Bei einem wasser das heyst Gyon, so heysset man es auch Nilus AUGSB. Diese Worte, denen in dem angeführten lateinischen Texte kein Satz entspricht, scheinen den Einbruch in den Boden zu bezeichnen, obwohl die Ausdrucksweise nicht klar ist. H. N. 5, 9. Das Verb smite wird öfter intransitiv von ungestümer Bewegung gebraucht: Treoflinge heo smot her and per ST. DUNST. 74. He smot out of toune R. OF GL. p. 564, wie mit on konstruirt, vom Schlagen auf etwas: Ones he smot dor on de ston GEN. A. Exod. 3871, cf. 3866. 3. Alothe, Aloch ITINER. c. IX. Do fleüfst es dann durch einen berg der heist Alat AUGSB. Wir ermitteln den vermeinten Berg nicht; er könnte in den problematischen Montes Lunæ der Alten zu suchen sein. Oder sollte es eine Entstellung des Atlas sein, wo manche den Fluss entspringen liessen s. oben. 5. Morekane scheint die Entstellung von Mauretania, Mauritania zu sein. Cf. Ein Begriffsunterschied in Bezug auf verschiedene Arten von Vögeln ist in den synonymen Substantiven nicht zu suchen. 7. sikonyes..ibes, storks..ibis. Cf. An dem wasser wonendt on massen gar vil storggen die heissendt sy ibes ACGSB. Ibex d'oisel est nun, que cigonie apelum; De Egipte vint del Nil PHIL. DE THAUN Best. ed. WRIGHT p. 120. Die Form ibes stellt wohl den lateinischen Plural des Wortes dar, welcher ibes und ibides lautet. Zu den Sumpfvögeln oder Watvögeln (gralla) gehören der Storch und der Ibis; beide in der That auch zu derselben Familie. sikonyes cikonyes, vom lat. ciconia, afr. cigonie, be cigunie. 10. be als moche etc. Vnd auch nit weitter dann als verr in das wasser gedienen mag AUGSB. flodes or otherwise i. e. durch Ueberfluthungen oder in anderer Weise, etwa durch Kanalisirung. Rameses, Raamses war eine Stadt im Lande Gosen (GEN. 47, 11, Exod. 1, 11; 12, 37), deren Distrikt also hier wie in der Bibel durch den Begriff Land bezeichnet wird. Cf. GEN. A.
