Das im MS. fehlende Wort auter hat BLACK hinzugesetzt. Wir finden gewöhnlich weved statt auter in der Mundart des Verfassers, wie BEKET 1080, 1083, ST. KENELM 252, 254, Sr. EDM. THE CONF. 152. und so vom Hochaltare: To pe heze weved 11000 VIRGINS 159. ST. EDM. THE CONF. 452, BEKET 1896. Wir ziehen jedoch auter, welches' übrigens auch v. 2208 vorkommt, darum vor, weil die Hebung auf die letzte Sylbe des Wortes fallen muss, wie dies in auter vorkommt, während wir wered auf der ersten Sylbe betonen zu müssen glauben, wodurch hier drei unbetonte Sylben hinter einander vor Trinite entstehen würden. 2486. Der Dienstag ist als der Tag anzusehen, an welchem bei den germanischen Völkern und wohl auch anderswo im Mittelalter vorzugsweise Gericht gehegt wurde. Zu den Bestätigungen dieser Thatsache mag auch unsere Stelle dienen s. GRIMM D. Rechtsalterth p. 818. Die Schreibung Norhamptone, welche auch sonst vorkommt (cf ST. KENELM 33), finden wir in unserem Stücke häufig, cf. BEKET 738, 746, 1005, 1122, 1123, auch Noramptone 1270. Uebrigens begegnet neben Norphamptone R. OF GL. p. 568, auch Norpamptoun p. 4, Northamtone p. 515, Northamtschire p. 5, ags. Norðhamtun. 2495. at Pontenay. Dort soll ihm im Traume sein Märtyrerthum, als Ermordung durch vier Männer in der Kirche zu Canterbury, erschienen sein BEKET 1571. Die Auswerfung des s in Tuesdais empfiehlt sich leicht; das Eindringen des Wortes god möchten wir dem Schreiber beimessen, welchem das gode aus dem vorigen Verse noch vorschwebte. Uebrigens hat der Vers sechs Hebungen, drei vor der Pause, wobei Tuesdai als dreiзylbig anzusehen ist, wie auch in den vorangehenden und folgenden Versen. 2503. sove, s. Pop. ST. CRISTOPHER.

Die Sage vom Leben und Märtyrertode des heiligen Christoph, welche einer weiten Verbreitung im Mittelalter theilhaft wurde und den Kultus und die Kunst bis zu den Cristophamuleten herab (s. Chauc. C. T. 115) beschäftigte, beruht auf Urkunden, denen schon die Bollandisten allen_historischen Werth absprachen Acta SS. Boll. VI. p. 125–146.

Es wird griechischer handschriftlich vorhandener Akten gedacht, nach denen Christoph unter Decius gelitten haben soll, wahrscheinlich mit Bezug auf die Christenverfolgung unter diesem Kaiser im Jahre 250. Der Kirchenhistoriker des 7ten Jahrhunderts, Nicephorus Callistus, sagt es, V, 27, bestimmt. Unter den Akten der Bollandisten ist, p. 146-149, nur eine Passio ex MS. Fuldensi auctore anonymo abgedruckt, welche im Allgemeinen mit den sogleich anzuführenden übereinstimmt, jedoch des „Suchens des grössten Fürsten" so wie des Tragens Christi" nicht gedenkt. In Pez Thesaurus Anecdd. II. 3 p. 27 sind Acta S. Christoph. Martyris versu et prosa descripta a Walthero Subdiacono Spirensi (a. 983) veröffentlicht, nämlich: Libri VI. de Passione S. Chr. p. 27-97 und Waltheri Spirensis de Vita et Passione S. Chr. lib. prosaicus p. 98-122. Die letztere Vita stimmt wiederum mit der von Jacob. a Voragine ed. Grässe p. 66-70. verfassten Lebensbeschreibung, mit der unser altenglisches Gedicht sachlich genau und oft fast wörtlich zusammentrifft, in soweit überein, dass jedoch das „Tragen Christi“ nicht erwähnt wird, obwohl es dort heisst: Dictusque est Angelica appellatione Christophorus (sein ursprünglicher Name wird Reprobus genannt) c. II. und Christi portitor sonat, cujus iste spiritualium adeo gerulus extitit sagittarum; ut mortis pro eo non formidaret accessum c. III. Jacobus a Voragine, in den Acta SS. gewöhnlich Jacobus Januensis genannt (episcopus Genuensis † 1298), beruft sich am Schlusse seiner Erzählung auf eine Præfatio des Ambrosius, worüber wir keinen weiteren Aufschluss zu geben vermögen.
