LA3AMON.

Lazamon, der Bearbeiter des Brut, dessen umfangreiches, in zwei ungleichzeitigen Rezensionen uns vorliegendes Werk, eine der reichhaltigsten Quellen für die Erforschung einer neu anhebenden Sprachperiode ist, scheint dem Ende des zwölften Jahrhunderts anzugehören. Sein Werk dürfte das älteste dichterische Erzeugniss in halbsächsischer Sprache sein, obwohl es im Gegensatze zu dem Werke Orms bereits romanische Elemente enthält.

Was wir von dem Verfasser wissen, beschränkt sich auf dürftige Mittheilungen, welche er selber in der Einleitung zu seinem Werke v. 1-67 giebt. Er nennt sich Lazamon (im jüngeren Texte Laweman), Sohn des Leovenath (im jüngeren Texte des Leuca), war Priester und lebte zu Ernleze bei Radestone oder Ernley im nördlichen Worcestershire.

Das Gedicht enthält die sagenhafte Geschichte Britanniens von der Zerstörung Trojas bis 689 n. Chr. Seine wesentliche Quelle ist Wace's Roman de Brut, dessen Hauptquelle wieder Galfridus Monmutensis ist; denn die ausser Wace von ihm aufgeführten Gewährsmänner Beda, St. Albin und Austin dürften in seinem Werke schwerlich bemerkbar werden. Jedoch hat er sehr bedeutende Partien, dichterisch gerade die besten, nicht aus Wace übertragen. Er spielt allerdings auch sonst noch auf Bücher an, aus denen er schöpfte und verräth weitere Kenntmiss namentlich welscher Ueberlieferung. Wie sein Werk noch Nachklänge angelsächsischen dichterischen Schwunges enthält, ist es selbst nicht ohne Einfluss auf die altenglische romantische Dichtung geblieben. Da Wace sein Gedicht (cf. Roman de Brut p. p. Le Roux de Lincy.
